Would a 99 5.3 be a wise choice?

I know the 05- have the better rods. Just looking to see how a 99 would work? I have the possibility to get one for next to nothing from a friend complete.

Depends on what 'next to nothing' is... If it's cheap enough, and isn't beat to hell, then why not? If it comes apart, you had next to nothing in it!
