cc306 on stock converter...fact or BS
hey guys, i was watching a video on youtube of lt1 z28 and the guys claims to have cc306 cam, 3.73 gears, and a built trans on the stock converter. He walks a bolt on 3v gt obviously but wouldnt you have big problems on a stock converter and the cc306? In the video, you can clearly hear it loping away, but lets get your guys thoughts...FACT OR BS. i mean i quess it would be possible, but pointless.

I dont doubt its possible to run that cam, yet all the reading and research i have done claims you need at least a 2400-2500 stall. I think if he is using that cam, he might have some type of aftermarket converter. Just wanted to see what people think, some people told me that even with an lt4 hot cam these cars wouldnt operate correctly on stock converter's.

Thats what i thought, i had gotten an 89 mustang gt, had full bolt on's, and the AOD auto with stock stall and a x303 cam. That bitch was horrible, it would surge at lights so badly i would hold on the brake, and rev it up a little or it would shut off. It would stall alot when backing out of spaces, and had no low end. I quess what i should have asked is if that cam would be streetable/practical. Sounds like it wouldnt be fun at all haha.

I run a bigger cam than a cc306 on my 383 combo and i'm still running a stock converter. So far the car has been fine car has only died once or twice backing up but other than that it does fine.

Years ago when I was a broke 21 year old I couldn't afford an aftermarket converter after I installed my CC305 cam and long tubes/Catback and CAI. I drove the car for a year this way, keep in mind the CC305 is much smaller than the CC306. It drove OK and had no power off the line at all, couldn't even spin the tires from a stop without foot-braking. I finally installed an EDGE 3400 stall and my 1/4 mile times went from 13.0 @ 107 to 12.3 @109 and think I could have managed a 12.1 out of it if I had set my ship points 200-300 RPM higher and worked on my 60ft a little.
So yes, you could drive around with a CC306 and the stock stall but you would be have a very unbalanced setup and the vehicle would not perform anywhere near its potential.

I just wanted to know if the cc306 would have to much surge, and not enough low end with stock stall to be run. Im not planing on doing a cam swap now, just wanted to see what you guys thought. Thanks everyone for replying.

We used that cam in my buddys impalla ss with a stock converter,
It drove fine, just a little weak out of the hole.
Once he added the 3500 converter and drag radials it woke up big big time!
