Default Replaced Foam Surrounds on Sail Speakers

I just bought a 01 ws6 and the sail speakers foam surrounds were bad. Speakers were replaced by GM twice under warranty before I bought the car. I priced new speakers on Fleabay over 100 for the pair new. SO what I did instead was buy the Foam Surrounds and replaced them.

The factory Sail Speakers are actually 6 inch NOT 6.5, I ordered two 6 inch foam surrounds for 5.99 and some glue for 4.99. Two hours later my speakers are like new and I saved over 100 bucks!

The speakers are 6.5" (actually 6.5S... 6.5" oversize that fit 6.75" mounting). The cones IN the speakers are 6". If you were to buy a 6" sub (if you could even find such a thing) it would drop right through the opening.

I'm sure this is going to last.

Did you consider a non-GM replacement?

I've done quite a few sets of these over the years...................and they are 6 inch not 6.5..........

6.5 speaker measures 6.5....6 inch speaker measures 6......

Every set i've done never had another issue with them and my wife likes her music LOUD.

All I'm hearing is...

OP: "Damn young wipper-snappers don't know what they are talking about. Get off my lawn!"

Mods: "Sorry sir, but you've wandered onto our lawn and I think you forgot to take your meds today."

Its nice that you know how to refoam a speaker and are satisfied with the results. Just leave the attitude out of the equation.

I apologize, rushed my post, and should have worded my first statement as a question. (I must not have had enough tequila in my Wheaties this morning.) I am truly interested to see how this repair holds up - even more so if the OP has experience in the area.

The speaker suspensions on the original speakers are horrible and notorious for tearing right "out-of-the-box." When I took my originals apart, they didn't leave a clean area on the cone to get a good bond for a new suspension. (I recall the cone was also paper.) However, I did save the magnets - which are phenomenal around the shop.

Speaker suspensions are glued on at the factory, so its a valid repair and I've seen people offering the service for large high end sub-woofers. But is it really worth it on these smaller OEM B-panel speakers? With a stronger suspension, I'd expect the 15 year old paper cones to start tearing. How long can they reasonably last?

If these speakers can be repaired in a durable way, I'd like to see a separate "how-to" thread with pictures. (We should also be able to share sources of supply as I don't believe any site sponsors are in to this kind of business.) This kind of thing is not for a novice and I'd be concerned that people might read about the repair (without detailed instructions or a "how-to") and try the fix with weatherstripping and Elmer's glue from Home Depot. (It happens - more and more as the population of F-Body "beaters" increases.)

If you measure the diameter of the cone i believe they are 6.xx and if you measure form the surround to surround then you get your full 6.75" it differz on how you measure.

For example when buying kicker speakers such as the DS65 6.5" speakers The cone is 6.5 but the whole thing itself is 6.75"

Stock speakers measure 6.00,OUTSIDE TO OUTSIDE pull the covers and measure them. New foams I use are indestructible and every set I've done the speakers have ALOT more bass response once refoamed. What I like the most about it is now you can't "BLOW" the speaker< the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If the foam degrades and falls apart THE SPEAKER IS NOT "blown". I have NEVER EVER found ONE speaker in any of these cars that was "BLOWN". They have one of two issues, bad foam surrounds OR bad leads where the speaker lead itself cracks right at the speaker electrical spade connections. I fix that problem by clipping off the lead and resoldering it to the connectors.

When the leads crack the speaker will cut in and out and sound terrible< I guess thats why people THINK they "BLEW" a speaker.

LMAO most people don't know anything!

I always thought they were 6.5" also. But they sure measure 6" and Delco calls them 6" speakers. Wonder where the 6.5" came from. It's sorta like calling little Gary 12" ;-)

Fwiw my subs tore only where the foam meets the metal. I put a ring of rtv around the seam and smoothed it out. That was 2 months ago and they sound great. When it fails I'll put a thicker ring.
