My differential blew up...quite literally
So I was driving, and when running over a bump in the road, I heard a clunk. I dismissed this as the torsion beam mount with the transmission, as I saw that it was somewhat worn the other day. About a minute later, I hit an indented pothole, and heard another clunking. This time, a slicing/rubbing/grinding sound ensued. I immediately realized that this was my diff f***ing up, but luckily I was less than 1/4 mile from my destination. When I pulled in and got out, I saw a longggggg trail of diff oil, and huge puddle had accumulated very quickly. I looked at the diff from the rear bumper side, and there was a 3-4 inch vertical gash in it on the left side of the housing. So, the diff is completely trashed, and I had to abandon my car for the night. Tomorrow I will be getting it towed to my mechanic. I have to find a "new" used rear end for my car. And I'm completely broke atm. this effin sucks
It's a 2000 z28 M6 with 113k on it. It was the original rear end

okay so my question now is, someone is selling a '99 differential with 3.55 gears. Can I swap out just the differential? I believe the rest of the rear end on my car is good. Plust I just had new rear brakes and pads and rotors put on. axles and suspension and everything seemed good to me. I need a response ASAP because I'm in a dire situation lol

I think my mechanic is trying to salvage the current differential. He mentioned something about a spider gear. I have no idea how he's going to pull this off..haha

so can you help me identify what kind of differential that is? that's my car with the cover taken off. Is that just the stock torsion diff?
and my mechanic was questioning if the auburn diff of which the link I posted will work in my car since it's different. But I should tell him that it definitely will, without any problems?

actually here is the link to the auburn diff I found http://allentown.craigslist.org/pts/3921201516.html

okay so I thought I'd update this just in case people were interested. Here's what happened.
One of the bolts of my diff carrier (1 of the 10 bolts), was snapped, and I think every time I went over a bump, it got kicked up into the gears, causing the cover to burst? So now I have the auburn in, and everything is working great. I have pictures of the snapped bolt in the carrier if anyone is interested

damn, that is so weird lol. Mine had 113k miles on it. I wonder if the Torsen diff itself is okay. It never made any failing diff sounds, nor had any symptoms. The p/o was bragging on how huge of burnouts he used to do, so it was probably nearing the end of its life anyways. The auburn I got put in has just 48k on it.
