LQ4 build need cam info?
I have the chance to buy a running 2003 lq4 with 123,000 miles on it, has the 317 heads, i'm going carb and intake, got the victor jr, and a quick fuel 750 dp, and running the msd box. I've heard stories of milling the heads .050 and cutting the pistons, instead I think i'll run the shim head gasket, which I believe will put me in the upper 9.7-9.8-1 compression, what cam would you guys use, im thinking something with a tighter lsa because of the lower compression, Any ideas? im want 400 rwhp.

I am building a similar setup and I spoke with Eric at Erson about a custom grind. His suggestion was a 112 LSA installed at 106. Grinding a smaller LSA on a stock core cuts the hardened portion of the lobe too thin. This cam also uses the beehive springs with all other stock components. I also plan to run a dual plane intake that matches the cam.

A tight LSA will help with the lower compression and the carb intakes like a tighter LSA than the plastic fantastic anyway. The cathedral port heads are a little out of my wheel house and I don't know what you are going to do with the car, but with your low compression, to keep the dynamic compression up, Id shoot for something in the low to mid 220s at .050 and keep it tight at 108-110 with some good lead ground in, say +4. With my LS3 and the GMPP dual plane, a 220 at .050 and a 108+4 made an amazingly wide power band with torque everywhere, from before 3K to 7K without any butt meter drop off. The cat heads like more duration than the LS3 heads do, IN A STREET SETUP ! ( I better say that before a half dozen guys start blowing me out, LOL) so mid 220s should work well for you. The best thing to do is talk to a couple of the cam gurus on here to get the specifics, like Martin at Tick. They spend countless hours pouring over LSAs, intake dynamics, etc,etc, and the cams are close to the same price as shelf grinds, if not the same. Might as well take it , if they are giving ! Zone89rs what kinda track times are you running? The motor is going in a 72 Nova, street/strip type a deal im used to running a .700plus lift roller 496 on the street, but I need something more streetable then that.

Just be careful on over camming that low compression engine, IF its a driver. If you are going to stall it loose and don't mind giving up some street drive ability, Zanes car proves you can go with low dynamic compression ! That Stang can scat ! He runs high 6 sec eighth at 100 on motor.
