Exclamation Need opinions on cylinder wall wear, pics inside 56k warning

These pics were taken on Thursday on a shortblock that I was going to have a shop assemble. The block is an '01 with 16,000 miles no nitrous or power adder. The engine shop strong recommended a block hone as you can see in the third picture there a definite divot/dimple in one of the cylinder walls and what they said is excessive wear to the other cylinders. I took the pics to another shop and buy looking at it also recommended a hone of the block. What do you guys think from the pics? Thanks. ~tony

The walls are semi glazed and from the looks need a hone..I would run a 3.9005" bore and piston (not 3.905") if possible..that way if it ever needs to be built again you can go to 3.905" instead of buying a different block or re-sleeving. But if you can't wait for custom pistons or are not really worried about rebuild again way down the road. Then just go 3.905" because there are tons of off the shelf pistons that fit great and are readily available. Hone it for sure either way though.

Yeah either way the shop said a hone would run $1000-1500 for the new pistons, rings, labor for teardown, honing, etc. Any more opinions? Thanks.

Wow......my stock shortblock w/91K miles on it looked almost new compared to that. YOu could still plainly see the crosshatch on my cylinder walls. A hone is definitely in need there though.

My concern looking at the pics is that the block may have been overheated. What looks to be modeling, splotchy dicoloration, more often than not come from water sitting in bore. The one cylinder with the knick looks to be discolored.... like 'black death'. Thats alot of wear for only 16K miles and normal use.

My block also looked alot better than that one with 26k miles on it. I could still see the cross hatches on mine. I would say hone it to 3.905 and get yourself forged pistons and new rings to go with the hone.

my 73k mile block still had the cross hatches
i went ahead and got some 3.905 Diamond pistons and rings for the rebuild
I'll get a big bore resleeved block next time

If you are interested I have the shortblock out of my '98 that I pulled a little while ago. The cyclinders looked like they were in really good shape and still had the cross-hatches. I am located in the San Fernando Valley area.

Drop me a line scott.allen@earthlink.net and we can talk pricing.

Thanks,
