Default Heads or 4.10' 12-bolt

The car is really slow getting into the rpms. I don't drag the car so I was going to put 4.10's in the stock rear (3.42 now, of course) but I'm worried it might still break with my drag radials.
I was thinking even though I like the power it has now that maybe heads would get me through the rpm band faster.
Which one should I do? I've seen good heads on here go for $1500 and down. I was going to get either a Moser 12-bolt ($2500) or an 8.8" ($2200) since I hear they are just as reliable and don't whine. Which one should I do? Will 4.10's be equivalent to the 30-40rwhp the heads will give me? I think gears would make the car 'feel' faster and be more fun either way. What do you think? Thanks- Mike.

thats a tough one...personally since you dont drag race I'd risk the destruction of the 10 bolt & get 4.10's for it and hope for the best & get some heads on top of it, but thats me & well I dont own a manual car so i might be biased. I just dont see the point in going to a 12 bolt on a street only car when you can buy working used 10 bolts @ $400 a pop.

This is a good point
with a m6 if you were planning to stay with 3.42's i'd agree with foff667
however, with 4.10's it gets way more expensive well, and easier to
grenade..
if you go the 12bolt/8.8 route at least you won't be walk'n anytime soon
gears help sotp more than heads.. my 4.10's are next!

Gears will do more for you than you could imagine. If you are running drag radials, you'll need the better rear end.

I don't know the specs on your cam, but I would think you'll have a better driving, quicker accelerating car with the gears matched to the cam.

Good luck.

I went cam/headers, then 4.10 gears. I would go for 4.10s before heads. Not only do they make you faster, but around town part throttle cruising is way more fun. Especially with a good sized cam.

As for 10 vs. 12-bolt: You said you don't drag race, but I see you have 315 Nittos. I assume you don't go to the strip, but you probably wail on it on the street. If driven aggressively, those nittos can probably break the 4.10 10-bolt on the street. I went with the 12-bolt.

Take the price of a 12-bolt, subtract the 400-500 bucks you can sell your 10-bolt for, and then subtract the price of the 10-bolt 4.10s that you won't have to buy. That's the difference between the 10 and the 12.

Like others have said, 4.10s in the 10bolt is weak,
So with your choices.
Go with some PP heads, then when you break you 10blot you can get an other one cheap, or then get the 12bolt if it breaks down the road on you.

We are running a special on Strange 12 bolts now that would be my first step the extra gear will make feel faster and take advantage of the cam. I personally broke the stock rear about 2 weeks after doing heads and cam (420rwhp) on the street w/ Nitto`s. Some last some don`t. We could also set you up with a good set of hand ported heads to match that cam if you wanted to go that route.

Thanks Nate

I'd go with the rear end first. That way at least you can put the pedal to the metal anytime without having to worry if the 10 bolt will snap on you.

I think I'm gonna go with the rear. I think it will make the car as fast as the heads would and alot more fun around town. Especially light to light. I forgot about the driveability with this cam. Its no G5X26 but its still a bigass cam. 229/233 .575/.585-112.

Murdock is exactly right. I don't drag race but I've never turned down a street race (that was a challenge, not to be cocky.) When those nitto's are sticky and being mounted on an 11" rim they hold pretty well.
Take the price of a 12-bolt, subtract the 400-500 bucks you can sell your 10-bolt for, and then subtract the price of the 10-bolt 4.10s that you won't have to buy. That's the difference between the 10 and the 12.
$2200
-$400 for mine
-$400 for gears, cover, kit, fluid
-$250 for install
=1150
-probability of breaking it.
= new rearend!

Thanks for the help everybody.
