whats needed to safely run a turbo with 1psi?
This is going to sound stupid and crazy, but i'm dumb so i'm gonna ask anyway. What is needed to safely run a turbo on nearly no boost? Can it even be done? I'm currently rebuilding my engine and i'll have a little extra to build a turbo setup and install SOME supporting equipment. I want to get my car up and running soon as it's been down for almost 2 years, but i don't want to have to buy a new exhause (the stock one is shot) only to replace it in a few months to a year when i install a turbo. I want to install the turbo basically just so i'll have an exhaust system. Sounds crazy I know. I'l be running a 408 built for boost with 317 heads. It'll be intercooled as well. Besides the system, wastegate, bov, and boost controller what else do i need to safely run this?

The only way IMO would be to install a big wastegate and pin it open. If your spending the money on a motor and a turbo plus the installation all the hard stuff/exspensive stuff is done you might as well finish the install the right way. With a 408 you gonna have the car tuned anyway I'm assuming you might as well have them or whoever tune for the turbo to while you there. Don't overthink it just do it right and if you don't wanna hurt your new motor tune it on 5-10lbs and be done

Yeah, I know, i'm a little crazy and/or stupid. I just really wanna drive my car again. I guess it's like a convict wanting to get laid after they get out of prison. I miss it like crazy.
Beanslsxnova I'm mostly worried about the fuel supporting the turbo. I'm still running the stock pump, but i have 42lb. injectors. It's next on my list after my engine is set up, but i want to be able to drive it ASAP.

Just let the output of the turbo that would go to the intake or intercooler breath into atmosphere. The turbo would just be a little back pressure the intake wouldn't see the turbo at all. I don't know of any longevity issues with this but I know I have ran my car like this for a little while when just putting around town when one of my intake tubes blew off.

Putting on a turbo is going to cost way more than getting a new exhaust built. What your asking just doesnt making sense....
If your putting on a turbo then surely you have a welder, you could build your own complete exhaust for $50-$75. Putting a turbo to make 1 pound of boost cause you need an exhaust so you can drive again?????
If you got a 408 built for boost, you should have plenty of money to do it right.....

Just put a cheap set of headers on the car so you can drive it and then collect all your turbo stuff and throw it on when you get all of it. You can find some cheap headers in the classifieds probably for 100 bucks. Hell, i have some OBX stainless ones still brand new in the box. I'll sell them to you what I paid for them $250.00.

Sorry guys, I was a little drunk when i posted this. Thanks for reeling me back to reality though. I'm gonna stay N/A until I can do it right. Tequila gives me some crazy ideas sometimes.

The smart way would be build the turbo setup etc., downpipe exhaust, then
Remove the turbo an build a connector pipe to go from the t flannel to the downpipe
Then put the turbo back on when your ready

just got drunk and everything OP posted makes complete sense. my drunk recomendation is the feed to the exhaust outlet to the compressor inlet, then the compressor outlet to the exhaust inlet. should be self sustaining 1 psi for ever.
