Default Tach issues

After racing at the track last week I noticed that my factory tach didn't seem like it was very reliable. I did some searching and found that in almost all cases, they aren't. My question is, what do you guys recomend, a aftermarket tach or just a shift light? Where did you mount it? And are you satisfied with your choice? Is there any problems with hooking one up? i.e. will it cuase the car to throw a code, etc.

Since the automatic shifts for you, adding an
aftermarket tach is not going to bring much
(except infotainment) to the party. Manual
shifting the A4 is not recommended though
a few seem to like doing it. Tuning settings to
shift like clockwork is better in the end.

Ok, then the next obvious question, how do you go about programing the shift points?

A handheld programmer will let you mess the
WOT shiftpoints around. But better, and not
-that- much more expensive (esp. if you own
a laptop already) is something like HPTuners
which will let you scan & record operation as
well as programming in detail engine & trans
parameters. Alternative (at more total $)
would be to buy a separate scanner/logger
tool and LS1-Edit.

Check the PCM section for way more than you
probably want to know, about all that.
