What is the purpose of the x-pipe?

Basically, from my understanding, an X-pipe helps by using the low pressure created after one exhaust pulse passes through to 'pull' the next cylinder's exhaust wave.

I just equalizes the pressure in both pipes in a high-flow manner. Same way an h-pipe works.

well im not expert, never really read into it, but my basic idea is this:
the way a proper X pipe joins together, it creates sorta like a vortex, kinda like a tornado inside the pipe, which sucks more exhaust from the motor, which my guess is this helps get more **** out so more air can go in...which would help produce more power, particularly in the upper rpms because there is a stronger scavenging effect (the vortex is stronger)...someone please correct me if im wrong, but this is my understanding of how it works.
H pipes sound better, if you are going true duals, get the h pipe.

In that article about the Magnaflow system, they say that they stepped the tubes going back to the mufflers. Their reason of making the 3" pipe turn into a 3.5" pipe, then going BACK DOWN to 3" for the muffler inlet was to, "prevents the gasses from stacking up as they pass through the mufflers to avoid excessive backpressure in the system."
Is that right? It seems it would be completely opposite of that to me. Maybe I'm too much of a n00b then eh?
