They all are fine engine builders, but I would definately add Futral Motorsports to the list. My last motor was a FMS forged short block with GTP heads a TR230/224 cam car ran 10.60 on motor.

due a search with each name and see what kind of responses people have given about them. I do know futral has an awesome rep. and so does APE and I haven't heard any complaints about either one of them.

Are you providing a core? Are you staying with stock displacement? What are the goals, is it a street car or race car? Is there a power adder? What intenals do you want for rods, crank, pistons etc.?
I would suggest you call them and get a feel for which one you feel comfortable with.
My $0.02 worth. I have an ARE forged internal motor, it has been bullet proof and taken tons of abuse, my old motor was bored and sold as seasoned and continues to run solid. I'm not making a recommendation just sharing some info and looking to see what you are trying to do before making any suggestions.

All the vendors listed do great work.
Whoever you decide to go with I would definitely spend the extra money on mainstuds, headstuds, good rods and ARP rodbolts.
Most of these combos come with diamond pistons which will work find for your needs.

For the next few months we will still have our 3899.00 no core deal at HPE on our iron 408s but after that we will probably go up a little. Some of the internals have been harder to get that I previously thought they would be. We also do everything in-house in our own machine shop on these shortblocks and can do custom pistons for almost nothing more if you need something different and can wait a wee bit longer. I've built from low 9 second LS1 engines and also normal daily driver mid ten second LS1s so it's all good whatever you choose but the shortblock DOES go together differently at our shop. We don't have shortblock waiting on you but the advantage is that anything that needs to be changed like ring gaps and/or other specifics CAN be pretty easily. We can make it your way if it needs something different.

I'm also gonna have to say APE, (yes I am biased)
the guys there are seriously more into going fast than making money.
Give them a call.
If you do not like them another reccomendation is Futral
I have seen both shops treat not only myself but other customers extremely well, they both have very nice shops, and most important have an excellent knowledge of ls1's and similar engines.
