Default rear end

i got a 02 ss and i got this clunk in my rear end and was wondering what it is and my dad said if i was going to rip it open to see what is wrong i should change the gear ratio at the same time and he said by changing the gears it will probly get rid of my clunk sound what gear should i go to and will this help the problem and how hard is it to do?

when do u hear the clunk?

M6 or A4?

when puting it is rev. or drive and at low speed like 20 or lower and i tap the gas it will clunk what is m6 or a4 ?

mine did the same thing. i took it to the dealer and they replaced the Drive shaft with an aluminum one

M6= 6 speed manual
A4= 4 speed automatic

i already have an aluminum drive shaft i have the a4

hmmm...im not sure if they changed anything in the rear end, but i kno that the drive shaft was replaced. do u still have it under warranty? if not try running a search on the site and see if anything comes up.

either:
1) broken tranny mount
or 2) excessive backlash

depends what the clunking sounds like. Is this repeatative clunking? or only the first time you transistion to acceleration?

Replacing the tranny mount with a poly one is an easy way to trouble-shoot this.

Then you must have lucked out... I can't imagine why the DS would ever cause clunking unless the u-joint/yolk was tweaked... never heard of a stock car doeing that. And LS1's have aluminum DS's from the factory anyway... You sure they didn't just replace the tranny mount? That's a very cheap, quick, and easy fix; also very common with 4th gens.
