Default Tach Lag .............. Discussion

Was not really sure where to put this topic because it happens more on the street but here goes.

On the way home tonight I decided to play around a little. It was very cold out so the car was pulling hard and breaking loose easily. I pulled out and rolled into the throttle and the tires went up in smoke, but then it felt like my car was hitting the rev limiter at about 5K RPM, at first I thought this was detonation . so at the next couple of stops I waited to roll into it @ about 3k to make sure it would not spin and ran the car through the entire RPM range a couple of times....It was completely smoothe....no detonation . So it looks like it was just Tachometer lag.

My question is: is this normal in a stock geared M6? The Tach was lagging by a good 1000 RPM when the tires were spinning . I am getting 3.73s installed in the next couple of weeks, should I expect this to get worse??

Sorry so long,

TIA,
-Nick

Yep - the factory tach lag is terrible in first gear, bad in second, and allright for the most part by the time you hit third. I did the same thing the first times I got on it hard in first gear - banged the rev limiter even though the tach showed nothing close to redline.

I would highly suggest you get a shiflight of some kind - solves that problem.

Same here. When I hit the 6750 limiter, my tach reads 5500 That's only in first and second though, It has a little time to play catch up in third.

Am I correct in assuming that this will get worse with a lower gear (3.73)?

I would say gearing does make it worse. The faster it revs, the slower the tach is. Some are down right stupid slow. Some are close.

Gears will make it worse.

Nick I think it's time for a shift light.

I had a big problem with that when I got my cam and 4.10's installed, noticed that RIGHT away, I decided to have a 5" Autometer Silver series tach put in w/blue shiftlight, it does the job, all you need really is a shift light, but I like to stare at the rpm's on there....

I had/have some really bad problems with my car on nitrous like that. The first time I sprayed my car I took it out and I raced a guy and I had nitto's on and I hit the button and the car just lunged forward and the tack just stuck at like 3,500 and( I left off the kit) then it shifted and the tach flashed to like 6,400 and back down to like 4,000 and I laid back into it and it lagged again and it eventually cuaght back up.

Needless to say I haven't sprayed the car since, to even see if it still does it. I plan on finding out soon.(if it does lagg I'm gunna be in big trouble b/c the new converter and nitrous are gunna make a hella difference)
