Default 3" Chromoly DS question

got my 3" Chromoly DS in the mail the other day, and this **** is wayyyy heavier than the stocker 3" aluminum, just wondering if anybody else was suprised by the weight of it and would i benefit by going to a 3.5" aluminum one instead, btw i think the box said it weighed 23lbs box and all

Yes, you will have increased driveline loss with a heavier driveshaft. It all depends on your application that you'll be using it in. I would go with the lightest driveshaft that you can get away with. Go with the smallest diameter to (lower moment of inertia); it's easier to get moving. With the mods in your sig, I don't see why you couldn't use an aluminum unit with no problems

well i put it in, seems to have a slight vibration once i get up to 50-60mph, havent gone any faster yet, im gonna drive it to work tonite could it be slightly out of balance or what? if so should i discontinue to drive it until i get it balance(how much does this usually cost?) if it is out of balance could it hurt the bearings in the tranny/rear from being out of balance? anyone else experience this, or could it be that the stocker having carboard stuff inside and the yoke and u joints look so much buffer on this one that im just feeling the more solid piece?

^ I've got the same problem with the one I just put in. Its ok up til about 70, but by 80 its vibrating noticeably, and worse with the clutch out and coasting. I made a thread about it a few topics down the page. It was advised, as I expected, not to drive with it like that. So I'm bringing it to a shop to get it tested for balance on friday or saturday. If it's out I'll have them try to balance it.

Don't know. I wanted to get the balance independently verified by a shop before calling the vendor about it just to be sure I didn't do something wrong on the install. But I've triple checked everything as far as the u joint seating in the yoke, and even rotated it 180 degrees and reinstalled it, and it still vibrates. If the shop says its not balanced, then I guess I'm giving them a few bucks to balance it. Too much of a PITA to bother shipping it back and sending out a new one (which may or may not be balanced). And at this point I've got about 5 weeks left of the racing season here in NY. Finally got my tires, a strong d/s and good air. So I can't let it go to waste shipping shafts back and fourth. Hehe, otherwise i'll try to get a pass or 2 out of the stock aluminum shaft, and see if it snaps with a 5k+ dump on stickies. Then throw this one in and drive home at <70mph! Sucks, but oh well...

I have a Lingenfelter 3.5" aluminum driveshaft for sale on ebay, item #7922841880. It weighs 12.2 lbs and is much stronger than the 3" LS1 or 1LE aluminum shaft.

Did you ever get this fixed? I could be that the bolts are to tight at the u joint.

Had the balance verified on mine, it was dead on. Bolted it back in, but tried to torque the bolts little by little and as evenly as possible across all 4. Doesn't seem to be too bad now. I think my tail might have been a bit sensitive initially - I do have a poly trans and T/A mount, so some vibration is expected.
