Opinions PLEASE!!!! SLP or not???
I just finished pulling my buddies motor, 01 TA, East Side Heads/cam, full bolt on car.
He was pulling the motor to freshen it up. ESP was going to be doing it, all new stuff inside, a similer set up to mine, besides the custom pistion and the lunati rods. but he was going with good pistions, nitrated cranck bla bla bla. a nice fresh motor.
Then he started thinking about the slp 402 short block. he like the idea of the big cubes, but hates the idea of all the extra weight for race purpose and street driving. not sure how good the slp short block is, and not sure how much more power it will make, either set up he does will recieve the same heads (freshend up, and same cam he has now) and on top of the hole thing he will be hitting it with a 125-150 shot from a NOSzle kit.
any input???
thanks alot.

Well what cam is he going to run? I wouldn't leave a 346 cam in a 402, Also i would upgrade to stage III heads,
You know bigger bore; Bigger cubes=bigger cam, bigger heads.
Otherwise he will not really benefit from the full potential of the extra cubes.
IMO he should be shooting for a 500rwhp N/A target.

His heads are done very well. they flow over 300, and when he has them freshend up, then they will also be cut a little to bump comp up a tad, but yes, the cam is iffy, but im sure it will work ok.
I dont care for the irion block idea, i think with a 347 ESP set up it will make close power without the weight to carry. but he realy wants to be able to say 402 ci motor. not 100% sure why, but he does. im just tring to see if it is worth it for him.

Personally if I were to go iron block, I would go with more cubes, 427 if you know what I mean. Look it is only 80lbs more up front. Delete AC/ battery to back/ Air, add Upper/lower A arms chrome molly stuff and you can make up for that 80lbs. of course this is all expensive.

If he is going to do a Iron Block Strocker I would rather have a 408 than a 427, I like having the pin lower in the pistons, I like a good square motor 4"bore x 4"stroke, a 4.125" is just a little too much stroke IMHO

80 lbs is alot on a race car.
because to remove 80lbs from the car then put it back, to me that sucks. id rather remove 80pounds, make 20 less rwhp but go as fast do to power to weight ratio, just my opinion. so what are you saying, 427 or 347. only thing is slp is offering a good price on the 402

Personally I would wait to hear back from people on quality of the SLP shortblocks. I havent heard any feedback on them yet.
APEs price is similar to SLPs isnt it? Plus they have the new delivery guarantee etc. You'll need to open up the heads too and look at a different cam as well.
If you are worried about weight go with a stroker (383-385) with alum block.

Well as we all know (torque) is where it's at! So i would say 402, but from SLP that's up to him. I would wait for real life in car testing IMO. No one seems to have jumped on that deal. Seems bizzare to me.

Chris, he wanted a 382, but its more money, the price of the motor realy cought his eye.
as for APE, i know of to many people having issues with there parts, i wouldnt send him that way, no my self, but some people i know with there parts.
As for heads, im sure his will do, they are CNC, ported polished, they will be PP a little more, then all new valves and ect ect will be in them. cam is a good ????? he loves his cam because it is just a great street/strip cam with no issues what so ever, idles perfect, drives great and makes good power. His stock motor with 60k+ miles made 430 ther a 12 bolt 4"10's, t-56, 2 cats and 3 muflers, yes 2 cats and 3!!!!! muflers. thats why im thinking small motor fresh with his new heads and same came the car should make 450 anyway, and take a 125-150 shot all day. NOSzle system to, so its nice and safe kit.

I`m planning a 427 iron block. MTI has built some with really good results. I`m going to spray a 200-225 shot also. Alot of people don`t like the 427 iron but Dav at MTI says no problem and 80lbs isn`t nothing. If He wants to spray it, with the iron block just give it alittle more of a shot to make up the differance in weight. The iron block can handle alot. But N/A you will have lots of TRQ to have fun with. Mine is in progress!!

Tuff calll,If he adds a K-member then its only 50lbs more.
The 408 will make 500RWH w/the right cam/heads.
U and Scotty are flying w/ESP 347 setups but if your buddy likes to light to light it then the tq of the 408 will be insane.
Tuff call...
I'd go 408/K-member and a wicked set of heads/right cam

Its 108? that is good to know. i figured it was heavy, irion aint light. hehe
the thing is with the minimal power he will make with a 408 over a 347 to remove all the weight it will even out. if you make 20 more hp and tq, then lose 50 pounds with a k member, and move the batery ect ect, then the alum blocked car should be faster. Take a car that is the same weight without a motor, put a 402 and a 347, both with the same Heads and cam (because he isnt changing his)
i'll bet the 347 will win, or be very very close. and still have great handling on the street. I already did some homework on this, and that is why i went with a 347, im just tring to make this post, then in a few days i will print it and with this info, my info, and what he knows, then he can decide.
i'll be honist tho, i think the only reason he wants it is to be able to say Yhea, it has a 402 in it. weather it is faster i dont think he cares

Ok guys I got the True weight.Iron Vs Alum
Iron block weighs 96lbs more than the aluminum LS1 - I personally put them on a scale - put this one to bed.

I would go with the bigger motor. You can go with a big cam and still be very tame on the street. Not only that , in the future when he`s ready to really get it up there he`s got the shortblock already made up. You can see in my Sig what I run, sooner or later you want more! Thats just racing and having fun. I don`t get taken much, but I want more, and big stroker motors are the way to go!!

96 - kmember = 66 - battery in trunk (acts like losing 40lbs) = 26lbs.Tuff call,its only 26lbs more but probably 40 more RWH and 50 more RWT from 2500 to redline
Figure the same thing w/a 347 and the setup would be -76lbs off the nose but be down the 40/50.
Noyz,I think u may be right, its gonna be close...
