Porting 205's...Cost "effectiveness"??

Just a suggestion....you might consider selling your 205's to someone more concerned with good overall power and drivability versus just big peak numbers (which look good on a chassis dyno as well as a time slip) and put the proceeds from the sale towards a set of 225's which are very close to completion. Certainly more power could be had be crossing all the "T's"and dotting all the "I's" on your current 205 combination(which could easily hit 470+ with more compression, degreeing the cam, tighter quench, etc, etc.), but if your going to take the trouble of tearing the motor down and checking camshaft location etc., you might as well REALLY step up the program and go with a different cam and possibly the larger 225 cylinder heads. I am confident that the 225 cylinder heads will set a new "bar" for power on stock displacement shortblocks (and larger) when the right combination of parts are chosen and installed properly. I plan on bolting a set on my current combination in the next few weeks in conjunction with a slightly larger, but still "street friendly" camshaft. Im hoping to see another 20-30 plus RWHP putting me over 500 legit, with no tricks, all the belts hooked up, not to mention my "power robbing" 3.90 ring and pinion. You might want to wait and see how the AFR 225 more aggresive street package works out and just "copy and paste"....This time make sure you hit ALL the details so there will be a lot less guesswork on your final results.
Regards,
Tony Mamo
PS I will be posting a thread VERY shortly concerning the AFR 225's and there production launch which is just around the corner. We didn't cut ANY corners and the final product is proof of that...it's a killer piece.

We just installed our first set of 205cc AFR's... TTP finish ported, polished and port matched to a 90mm LSX intake. On a 02 f-body m6 4.10 gears, afr 205cc heads unmilled 10.2:1 C/R, ttp equalizer v.2 camshaft, lsx 90mm, fast 90mm tb, slp loudmouth, kooks 1 3/4 ory, we made 482rwhp/417rwtq... We were very pleased with these numbers.

You have to ask a few more questions than what does a head flow when comparing two different intake port sizes. Flow numbers are good, but you have to look at the velocity / size of the port. I can hog out a port to 400cc and make awesome flow numbers but that doesn't mean they will perform. Anyone can hog out a port to 225cc+ and make 310-320-330 flow numbers. However, the AFR heads are 205cc intake port size and flow 301 @ 600, which is an awesome number for a "small" intake port. Of course the AFR 205's aren't producing the "killer" flow numbers because of the small port. The smaller, redesigned intake port increases velocity pushes the air through faster and therefore makes the hp.
Yes flow numbers are good to go by, but you cannot compare flow numbers of a 205cc head that flows 301 @ 600, to a 225+cc that flows 318 @ 600.

Mike: Intake Port Volume = 205cc. Superflow 600 bench was used on 3.90 bore @ 28 inches of water.
Once again, the point I'm stating is that flow numbers are not the only consideration when seeing what heads make the power.
Bottom line is the heads make the power, no matter what they flow.

Hey Mike, flow numbers are good for comparing heads, but just making the intake port bigger to improve flow numbers on a bench will not always make more power. Most don"t realize the importance of velocity, what it does is force more are into the cylinder as the valve is closing and or it controls reversion where the intake charge goes back toward the intake as the valve is still closing and this means less A\F in the chamber.
A smaller port head with good average flow numbers will out perform a bigger head with the same numbers.A good example is the new AFR BB Chevy head, they have a 315 cc CNC head and it makes great power, with a .255 at .050 solid roller cam,Victor jr intake, headers and like 9.5 CR it make 740 hp at 6000 RPM.And it made over 600 ft lbs from 4500 to 6000 RPM.Imagine a 12.5 CR and a bigger cam, maybe 800 hp plus!!A315 cc head is considered small for a BB Chevy where 365 cc heads are available, some even bigger.BTW this 315cc head WILL FLOW NEAR 400 CFM!!
A note to ppd,do the work on your 205cc heads, just keep the cc"s down on the port work, mostly fine tune them don"t HOG them out,you will be sorry if you do!!Go a head and mill them,SET YOUR QUENCH!!!!!This is SOOO IMPORTANT,THIS IS HORSEPOWER!!!!! Match your intake ports to the intakes ports, polish the chambers.Do the extra stuff but do it modestly.Sometimes what LOOKS GOOD don"t help AT ALL!!!I know this from experience, and I have been real disappointed by some great looking porting that I thought would be an improvement and didn"t add jack!!Don"t get the 225"s unless you"re going all out=MAX EFFORT!!The key here is VELOCITY!!
