Default how to pick the right head/cam combo??

ok, i have been reading on this stuff forever and after reading long long posts i still have no idea what to do or get.

first off from what i have read, i gotta pick the heads before the cam. gonna have ls6 intake. what kinda heads should i shoot for? from what i have read, ls6 stage 2 would be good. i wanna make somewhere around 450 rwhp through a 12 bolt with a really really good tune. the size of the cam i was thinking of is about mid 230's duration and about .600 lift on a 112+4 lsa. i just dont know what to look for in heads and what the advantages and disadvantages are. staying stock cubes too, ported tb, lt headers and gmmg. need anymore info to help?

and the cam, talkin to people im still kinda wondering what way to go. 112+2 or 112+4. car will see street and the strip one or 2 times a month. dont know how ot split the duration either or if i should split the lift. like 232/236 234/236 or what u know? after i get a 12 bolt im gonna start on cam stuff this summer. so by then i wanna have it all researched very well.

I too plan on going heads/cam in the future. I plan to go with 5.3L heads, because you can increase compression without milling (more power). This gives me the option of running a larger cam in the future (piston to valve clearance). Plus, they are A LOT cheaper than LS6 heads. Unless you have a set of LS6 heads to serve as a core (or are planning on buying the Patriot "LS6 style" heads) it is going to be pretty expensive. I would look into 5.3L heads from TEA, MTI, PRC (or others but these are the three I am looking into). Then get all the specs on them and call FMS and have them recommend a cam for you (maybe off the shelf, but possibly custom ground). This is the option I plan to go with, and I plan on having about 450 hp through a 12 bolt or 9 inch with a M6. I think I can do this with a cam about the size of a F13 (230/232). Another option besides the 5.3L and LS6 are the AFR's. The 225's aren't out yet, but I think I would much prefer those over the 205's. Especially the 225's with the smaller combustion chamber (more compression), but they won't be out for a few weeks. I can't wait to see results on these, but they are probably a lot of money. Anyway, sorry I'm long-winded, hope this helps.

get a good set of heads, flow them independently w/ your intake. get with a competent cam grinder and the specs will fall into place.

Its hard for a A4 to get to 450rwhp. I have MTI S2 heads and X1 cam, safely tuned for spray with 12-bolt 3.73 gears I pulled 414. If I leaned her out and put the timing back in I could have gotten 10-15 rwhp more. Really close for A4. Right now MTI is adding LSX 90, 90TB, kooks 1 7/8, and a new cam they have. Its bigger than my X1. I`m hoping to get 450rwhp+ when its tuned and spray it also to close to alittle over 600rwhp. I will have her out in a week or so. I will let you know my new numbers!!

It is hard to get 450 rwhp out of an A4 car unless you have cubes or a lot of money tied up in a 346. I got 404 rwhp (unlocked) with MTI stg2es and TR224/114 cam. Also had Pacesetter LTs with OYP and cut out. All this is good for mid 11s in good weather with stock gears and mild converter.

you guys have to remember that horse power is not every thing unless you have fast times to back it up....you should plan your gears, torque converter, heads, intake, and cam all together...if you do this you may not have the highest rwhp but your car will put down some crazy times on a mid-mild setup....all about the combo!!

o yeah i know this, but i gotta set some kinda goals cause i dont know how fast 11 sec is, might be too fast. but i do know how 450 hp feels so thats why i said that im not too worried about hittin it u know? trust me after all the research i have done i know its all one piece to the puzzle. but i would say i wanna run close to 11.0 but that depends on the track and driver and weight and i think there are more factors in that than hp, thats hwy i said it. but you are right and more people need to see than instead of being all caught up on power

I to will be doing a new H/C set up around april or so (I am in Iraq right now so it depends when I get home in march) The car is a 2000 SS M6 right now it has stock heads, the hot cam (218/228-.525/.525 112LSA), pace setter Lt's, LS1 Edit, 4.10 rear, stage 2 clutch, texas speed clear lid, QTP electric cut out and pullys. I am looking to get the car into the 10.xx second range or maybe even low 11.xx. can any one help me come up with a good H/C combo right now I am looking at the ABSOLUTE SPEED stage 2 5.3L heads to up the compression but am unsure what cam to go with to help obtain this goal. I think the hardest part will be doing this and the car still being streetable with a good tune. I have another vehical so it wont be daily driven but I dont want to have friends with me asking "is that soppose to do that". I know I will have to sacrafice some streetabity just dont want to have to sacrifice it all. Any advise on this would be great.

Thanks
SPC Culbertson
