Default cobra / SS - Cali emissions

I need your guys help here - I have a 98 SS and want to make around 450hp to the wheels. But I live in Cali, My question is, I have a chance to buy a 03 Cobra for about 24 grand, and I know that with just BPU and a ported blower they put down damn near 500 to the ground.
Iam no mechanic and cant change cams or even headers everytime I need to get smoged, witch is what I would of been doing to get around the emissions here. Iam sure that Stage 2 5.3 heads with 224 114lsa and some shorty headers will pass, but will only put down about 400hp. Also dont want to go the FI route, cause when its all tuned and installed it will be about 7 to 8 grand. Iam really leaning towards the cobra, but wanted to get some opinions on this before I sell my SS (whitch I really dont want to do). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kory

thing you gotta remember is 500 at the wheels in a 03 isnt the same as 500 at the wheels in a SS...the 03 is alot heavier car, so that 500rwhp car is comprable to a 420rwhp SS.....

Still, if i were you i'd go with the '03....i love f-bodies and all, but that's about the only car(other than a Z06) that i could see myself trading in on. plus, emissions would be alot easier to pass with that car

What does a 420rwhp LS1 trap at...126mph?

i don't like the way the mustang's drive as far as sitting, gas, brake, steering...however it would be the better deal and they look great...so if you like how they drive then go for it...it's just not for me...

I agree 100% with you there. I loved how my LS1 seat, steering wheel, and pedals were positioned.

Thanks for the responses, the first thing that I would do is get the weight down as much as I could on the cobra, those things are pigs. Unit213 what made you choose the Cobra over another Camaro?

get the cobra. more power can be made and for cheaper and be 100% smog legal.

not worth going n/a to pass smog here, you'll be throwing tons of money wont make nearly as much power as you could if you said **** smog.

Long story. The abbreviated version is that I had my sights set on a black '02 WS6 with 600 miles on it. It didn't pan out then I looked at a '03 Z06. I could fit comfortably in it. My head was in the roof (6'7 here). Ended up getting the Cobra for various reasons. It was option 3 however.

I agree with jrp.

If your going to keep the car stock! It wouldn't be too bad to get the cobra. Rear end sucks, clutch sucks. All the million hp cobra's around hear aren't that fast! It's all an opinion. Looks sold me. The question is..... what will make YOU happy? Good luck.

jrp - I agree with you 100% on that. Cali emissions are insane, I just dont see the point of doing heads and cam and spending all that money, then in the end wind up only making maybe 400hp, when it could be alot more. I know people here are making that with cam only! Man that pisses me off.
thanks again for the all the help.

You've got to be kidding right?

Stock clutch can handled 600hp/700tq. It may slip a bit, but that's to be expected. Stock IRS is good for 10's at high 120's. IMO, people blow up their IRS and burn up their clutch because they don't know how to drive. I have had zero IRS or clutch problems (knock on wood).

c'mon dan, admit it, you've got ls1 envy

and 9camaross8, another thing to ponder. the cobra has a factory forged bottem end. swap the pulley, add some bolt ands you'll be "smog what" . to me FI is really the only way to go in cali for power and still pass emissions. you can boost the fbody but they you have to start worrying about the bottom and rear end.

FWIW i went n/a, but im not smog legal
