Default what transmissions do the pro drag guys use?

i dont know the word for it,
i think its pro stock or pro mod or something.
those guys that go really fast in a straight line.

yeah, someone i know is talking **** about my auto
and after i give the stalled auto speech
(i hate talking to people about it who dont already know)
he tells me,
"well what does NASCAR use?"
i know damn well they use a four speed manual,
but thats oval track, not drag!

so here i am, asking what the pro drag guys use.
auto? manual? how many gears? what clutch/converter?

I'm pretty sure most pro stock cars use Lenco 5 speeds now. It's a planetary set up that uses a clutch just to launch the car. You can see them on Lenco's site. http://www.lencoracing.com/

BTW: You'll find that some of the most popular choices for street legal drag cars are the Power Glide, TH-400, and I think built 200R4s are pretty popular with some crowds. They are 2, 3, and 4 speed in that order. Most guys use full manual valve bodies with a trans brake of course.

-buy a 6 speed if you want people to think you're fast, buy an auto if you want to be fast

Incorrect, I have a 6speed and I know my car is fast. There are a lot of fast cars with manuals and there are a lot of fast cars with autos. It just depends on what class of drag racing you are talking about. Pro stock cars have manuals in them and run mid 6 second quarter miles. They are not for the street but still very impressive.

i have a 6-speed too

my comment was mostly referring to street cars, if i was drag racing constantly and diddnt enjoy driving a 6 speed like i do, i would have a th350 with a big stall in it...and be MUCH faster than i am in a straight line now. that is the point i was making, and it's pretty hard to dispute.

i have no doubt that a 6-speed car can go really fast, i think mightymouse is running 9's? as do many others, but this is not the norm. rick(HPE car) and harlan are running faster than that, and their **** doesnt have 6 gears MOST of the people building really fast ( time <11 seconds) are running AUTOMATICS.

i used to have a bit of a upturned nose toward automatic f-bodies, but then i learned a thing or two and found out what a stall converter can do for 'em.

Not too may people if any still use Lenco in pro stock. They mostly use the Liberty. Has a straight back and forward pattern. They are 5 speeds. Pro mod kinda depends on if its a nitrous injected car or blown car. The blown cars seem to favor 3 speeds and I think they like the Lenco.

I heard that Lenco has a street Lenco.

You'll find that beyond a certain level of HP manual transmissions, that is non-planetary transmissions ie. mainshaft/countershaft, cannot handle the power.

Therefore running 9.x or les in a 1/4 mile which requires a significant amount of power also requires a planetary geartrain to handle the power.

that is true, a guy in an auto SS found that out the other night by my house he also got wrecked from zero too, and this was before i put my exhaust on. (my traction was just a little bit > his traction)

it was pretty damn even, but it seemed like every gear i'd slam it into, id jump out on him a little bit more

Haha you run mid 12's.

I like people with a sense of humor

Most of the fastest street car guys run powerglides, and as the ET's get higher you'll see TH400's, then 200R4's..

A clutchless manual is the best.
It takes alot of clutch adjustment to get them right and are very expensive.
The trans is about 6k, plus bell housing, clutch, ect.

Probably close to 10k when you are done.

12.6 is fast? guess i didn't get the memo

fast is all in the eye of the beholder. i'll prolly never have an auto in my car unless i go F/I. you just can't shift faster than an auto in a 7-8 second car

Pro Mod guys use Bruno Lenco's NHRA Top Fuel cars run a single gear trans, really quick doorslammers, like low7's up to the low 9's run dedenbear powerglides.

Top fuel cars don't have a transmission at all. Just motor, clutch, and rear. It really depends what class folks are running to determine what trans. Lenco drives are the most common among Pro Mod. Quick 8 folks will use some variation of a powerglide, where class dictates the transmission must be fully automatic. Other classes such as Pro Stock will use Libertys 5 speed. The G-Force was once popular among Pro Stockers.
