Just as Lonslo said, Top Fuel = no trans. Top Fuel dragsters and Funny cars have only one gear. A timer controlled, hydrualicly actuated, multi-plate clutch slowly engages as the car goes down the strip with full lock-up about half way down the track. It slips for the first few seconds to limit the power to the wheels which limits wheel spin. Tire expansion rate is the car's gear ratio change after the clutch is fully engaged.

The majority of the serious Pro stock cars have a five speed manual. The clutch is used at launch, but during the run the transmission is shifted without the clutch. By using an iginition interrupt, they can cut power from the engine briefly. With the transmission unloaded, the next gear can be engaged and the ignition can be restored.

damn
i didnt plan on all this info
well, it doesnt seem to make sense to compare to the pros
because i see they use things we probably never will.
from now on, im going to ignore "why auto?" questions.
ill let them find out the embarassing way.

ls1tech guys sure know their ****.

btw, TheBlurLS1.. you know.. months ago,
i was frustrated with the weird looks from people
who dont know what a damn torque converter is,
and i came here and started ranting and came up with the phrase
"buy a manual if you want people to think you're fast,
and buy an auto if you actually want to be fast"
i wonder if you already knew that..
or if someone else said it too..

but really though,
manual is great too

..for autocross!

Don't underestimate the ability of a stick in the right hand. Heh, right hand ..... It takes a lot of experience and skill to compete with auto consistancy while handling the additional controls, but there are a few out there doing a damn good job of it. It's passion at its finest. I think I'd fall asleep if I had nothing to do down the track

i know there are some fast stick cars out there
but i also know if you get any of those fast stick cars
and remove the do-it-yourself tranny
and drop in even the factory mushbox 4L60E
with a PT4400,
the car will have a lower ET

i cant imagine falling asleep going down the quarter
even with my boring SS4000 street verter

but i can imagine becoming frustrated
consistently pulling slower times than guys
who are using less hp and less effort
