Question very starange problem...trip OD zeros out and RPM guage goes nuts at startup

K guys, just bought this car and new to LS1s.....

I start my car and the trip odometer zero's out virtually every time. In addition to that, the RPM gauge jumps up to red line, falls back down to 0, and then jumps around between 500-1500 RPMs or about 10 seconds before finally setlling around 700-800 RPMs, which is what it normally idles at. The engine does not seem to be doing the same thing though, the engine sounds smooth with no change in idle even while the RPM gauge is going nuts.

Sounds electrical to me....anyone have a similar experience?

Theres a TSB for 99's about this. Mine did the same thing and I replaced the battery and terminal connections (they were corroded) and ever since then its been fine.

Some people on here have experienced this and almost always its a low battery. Corroded connections/terminals can contribute as well. Replacing the gauge cluster masks the low battery problem because the later clusters had something built-in to compensate for it (I don't remember exactly what they did, probably involving capacitors).

I went to start the car today and the car wouldn't turn over since the battery is dead from the cold we been having. After I took the key out the speedo went to 90mph and everything else went up and the went back to zero. I thought it was kinda odd until reading this post. Have to wait to spring to get a battery.

Q: Why does the trip odometer on my 1999 F-body sometimes reset back to 0 during cold weather? I know I didn't reset it.

A: There is a Technical Service Bulletin that you can refer to when taking you car into the dealer for it. Apparently its something wrong with the gauge cluster on the 1999s only. The TSB number is 99-08-49-009. The problem only exists when the car is cold and the battery drops below approximately 85% normal operating voltage. This causes the instrument cluster to reset itself. The regular odometer is not affected, and no other areas of the car are affected.
