If the you see a code on the door that says GU2, then you have a 2.73 ratio. According to the 01 service manual, non-ws6 ls1s with 4-speed automatics have 2.73s (ws6s 4-spds have 3.23s)

Additionally the axle ratio, diff. type, rear axle id code, manufacturers code, and the build date are stamped onto the forward side of the right axle housing tube or on a metal tag on the housing cover, according to the service manual.

Answer: If you have a 6 speed transmission you have a 3.42 rear end, that's the only ratio available. If you have the automatic transmission there are two available ratios, 2.73 and 3.23. You can tell which one you have by looking at the codes inside the driver's door. Code GU2 means you have 2.73s, code GU5 means you have 3.23s. With the 3.42s & 3.23s you also get an aluminum driveshaft, with the 2.73s you get a steel one.
this was borrowed from LS1.com faqs
also you can check on the highway by doing 70mph and changing to 3rd gear check the rpms. 3200=3.23
2700=2.73
hope these help

Is this really true? If so should I look into getting a aluminum drive shaft. I know they are stronger plus I have heard that they also dot rob as much HP to the rear wheels.

The aluminum are not stronger to my knowledge. We busted the aluminum driveshaft on the firehawk, and replaced it with a steel one because it was stronger. (It was a steel one made by a local shop so I don't know how it compares strength-wise to a GM one.) The aluminum is going to be lighter than a steel driveshaft. The steel driveshafts can sometimes create more vibrations too...but I'll take that over twisting another aluminum one open like a tin can. Of course this was on an M6...it's less of a worry on an A4.
