Pontiac Keeps its Words on Solstice
When General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz confirmed production of the Pontiac Solstice roadster, he promised to keep it priced at "under $20,000." He's delivering on his word. The sleek little two-seater will go for $19,995 when it rolls into showrooms over the summer -- including a $575 destination charge. The announcement didn't get the usual play because of the unusual way it was released. Rather than putting out a press release, Lutz confirmed details in an article he wrote for the automaker's new blog, GMFastLane (http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/ ) . It's a place where, in the words of one company spokesman, "Bob Lutz and our other senior executives spill their guts." While there will be a variety of options available -- and likely plenty of aftermarket accessories, the base Solstice will deliver a well-equipped package, including 18-inch wheels, a heated glass rear window, and a CD audio system. A new Ecotec 2.5-liter in-line four engine will put out 177 horsepower through a five-speed manual transmission. GM expects to sell about 20,000 of the roadsters annually. -- Paul A. Eisenstein

From what I have read the Soltice will be a stripper for under 20k but you can add on amneties. IMO the Soltice is a nice looking 2 seater and should perform as well as the Miata (from what I read).
GM is smart in getting this little road racer out early before we start seeing new cars on the horizon. IF VW gets their mid engine RWD 2 seater in production (based on the concept R) then the Soltice will have more competition but the Soltice will be early. Also, is there any truth the Miata will no longer be produced and if so what would take it's place?

I was at the Red Dog Saloon right by the Proving Grounds and a camo'd one pulled up. The guy went in to grab pizza and came right back out. I tried asking him a few questions, but he politely said he could not talk about it. The car did have a familiar whistle to it as he hammered it out of the parking lot... Not saying for sure, but just sharing a moment.

GM wants to sell around 30,000 Solstices a year alone, not including the Sky. Does Mazda sell that many Miatas a year? Is the small roadster market even that big?

I see a lot of S2000 and Miatas around which I feel are the two cars GM is aiming for with the Soulstice and the Sky respectivly.

I don't see the big deal. There is a turbo Miata out right now and most people consider it a "lady" car anyway. I'm still MAD at Lutz for killing the Firebird with no hope on the horizon. The Solstice doesn't make me feel much better. I'd find many other ways to blow 20 grand instead of dumping it on a gaymobile Soltice. JMO
