Default Bored, decided to be MR. National Geographic...

So, I went outside to get some fresh air after being sick with the flu for a few days. I remembered I have yet to take down a "problem" that was in my shed since summer. When I first noticed it late summer, I thought I should wait until it's cold outside so "taking care of it" wouldn't bother its residents.

Take a look at the pics HERE.

Well, they were a few thousand of them flying around during the day. It's not often I go near that shed, so they accumulated FAST. I waited until night when it was cold to spray them beeeeeeeeeetches.

Holy ****! That is unlike anything I've ever seen. We've got paper wasps all over the property. I only have ever seen one exposed layer, sometimes up to 6 or more inches in diameter. That looks like a damn hornets nest!

Where are the residents?

i once took apart a wasp nest, got 22 baby lavre in all from in my garage. took them apart and out of the wholes carefully.. ranging from a lil white slug, to big slug, to big yellow slug with legs and eyes, and so on, all the way up to a brownish yellow covered in goo, nearly full sized wasp, that when i got him out of the nest, and slit his lil sac open, actually walked a few inches................ basically the nest was not there for that long, those things grow fast, and develop faster, i set there playing for a few hours and was amazed at teh different levles.. all with a piece of board to lay em out on in order, and a hobby knife.

I think they sting like yellow jackets. Hornets seem to hurt a little more.

Yep, it was pretty cool. I was looking up the different type of nests and I think it's a paper wasp nest. They are also called "umbrella wasps"....I think. The residents are long gone. I went out there armed like a S.W.A.T. dude complete with flashlight, thick jacket, hood, and most important - 2 big cans of RAID.

Thanks, I thought they were pretty interesting. Like you said, left alone, they can build some amazing stuff. The way that nest was put together, you would think someone with a engineering degree made the plans. Evolution at its best...clearly.
