pinion depth gauge how to?

Default pinion depth gauge how to?

i cant seem to figure out the proper way to use the proform universal pinion depth gauge, anyone know how, ever used it im so confused, math was never my stongpoint.

Is this the one that bolts to the differential, has a flat bar coming off of it and you hold the dial indicator on that flat bar??

I suppose you could use a dial indicator and keep adding shimms until the proper backlash is obtained.....?

Remember shimming pinion gear changed backlash and pattern but ring gear only change backlash...
