The LS engine has a area between 3800-4200 that has some strange harmonics. When you drive thru this zone the chain will start a bad whipping motion that will eventually lock up the links and cause failure. The fix in the original design was a stamped steel piece with a nylon guide that snapped on. That piece did not make production although they kept drilling and tapping the holes for about three years. We had a Motorola cup car somewhere around 1999-2000 that lost a transmission gear (3rd) during the race. This caused the driver to jump from 2nd to 4th forcing the engine thru the "bad" zone. The timing chain failed about one hour after the trans. The "fix" was to make a rub block like the original design. It stops the chain "whip" by giving the chain something to lean on.

If your block is drilled, SDPC sells them for ~$10. The beige ones.

The black LS2 dampner is $10 and will not fit a LS1 because the hole spacing is different.

BTW - I have a LS1 dampner for sale.

Hi Kurt
My engine has a double chain on it - for what ever reason, the engine is very rough around 1800 to 2000 RPM. Go past that point or below that point and the engine is fine. It does not matter if it is under load or not. Could I be having a problem similar to what you are describing? I appreciate any information on it.
Thanks
Bill

I doubt it this sounds more tune related.

Does anyone have apic of one installed on a block, I was thinking of doing this but using a tensioner set that Comp makes..it's designed for a SBC but i'm sure I can make it work.

My tuner, Doug Rippie Motorsports (DRM), told me that they check timing chain tension when they're in there. If it's adequate, they say a dampener is not needed. I was planning on just having one installed, however, these guys build some pretty phenomenol cars, so, I'll probably just go with what they think. I'm in the process of having a mild cam installed, along with heads, longtubes, new manifold and injectors and will have an LS2 timing chain installed at the same time. They are the same size, lengthwise, but quite a bit beefier than the 1997-2004 chain.

Cool thanks. Mine is going to locate on the outside of the chain putting tension inwards.
