cali leagal H/C
ok so ive been considering a large mod, ive been to the FI forum already, but i'm more interested in going N/A. the problem is, i'm in california, land of the treehuggers and i cant get away with much. so my question is this: what head and cam package can i buy that will run me less than $2500 that will alow me to pass cali emmisions, but still feel a significant increase in power. i know that i can get away with a mild cam (i don't know the specifics), but can i get away with some new ported heads, and still be emmissions leagal?

I think you would be ok with ported heads.
AFR 205 heads are emission legal head E/O # D250-4 but I doubt you will find them with a cam for under 2500.00

Long tubes will fail the visual, but good working cats and a good tune will get you past. Your permitted to show 2 incomplete IM tests on your car's pcm and still recieve a pass.

I'm looking at a cc 224/228 581/588 114 and wondering if it would pass ca smog.I know the valve overlap is -2 but don't know if its enough.Would i be better off with 224/224 114 to keep overlap around -4 or a 225/225 114 with -3.

buy a procharger or a vortec super charger or even an STS Turbo. They will all pass smog and you don't have to take your car apart. They will all put your car over 400/400 at the wheels. For H/C to perform well you will need to run long tube headers which won't pass. When its all said and done a power adder is cheaper and more powerful.
Either way do a lot of research before you decide to go either way.

Here is my idea to save you big bucks, pass emissions and gain considerable power, Buy some LS1 or 5.3 Truck Head Cores, send them to Bo White for his Econo port and polish job. ( Cores 300.00 - 400.00). Porting will Run 300.00-600.00 depending on what you want. Contact Ed Potter at LPE, ask about the GT2-3 Cam and find out if it will pass the sniffer, im pretty sure it will. The Cam is something along the lines of 207/220 on a 118.5 LSA. Idol, sound and drivability is completely stock. People have been seing 30 RWHP increases Cam only. The Cam, with LS6 springs will run you 400.00 as a package from LPE, maybe less so now we are at 1400.00 not including shipping. Then, purchase a set of Mac Mid lengths with Cats for around 600.00 i think. So were at 2,000.00. Send your Throttle Body to Cammin Beast, 75.00 dollars, now we are at 2,075.00. Buy a used Lid, 75.00 and a SLP loudmouth 2 from LM performance. That puts you at 2,500.00 not including shipping or install and i would bet you will see 380 RWHP and 360 RWTQ with a tune while passing emissions... I am sure others can come up with something better, but it would be a great daily driver emissions/budget set up!

My only thought is that if you're going to send heads to Bo, send your tb to him as well. He does great work AND it would save on shipping possibly.

You can then sell your stock heads for 300.00 and buy hardened push rods and pay for a tune too. Thanks, it could use a little refining but i think it will pass, be very driveable and have good power. I forgot Bo does the TB's too, DOH!

i talked with a smog guy a few weeks ago and he said that it takes a pretty big cam to fail on ls cars... and heads shouldn't make a difference, might actually help it run cleaner... (from the smog guy)

Your smog guy smokie to much cracky. Ported heads would allow more fuel into the combustion chamber which equates to more exhaust out. It may still pass smog but I am sure it won't run cleaner.

The car I refered to had Comp Cams XER lobes and the cam was ground and installed straight up. I can dig up the smog test results but it'll have to wait till monday as I'm out of town till then. PM me if you need to see the results.

i cant run mids only shorties, so would a H/C be sugnificantly affected by this? i mean i know ill lose power, but how much? if i get some tubes w/ cutouts on them to go where the cats go ( then replace cats right before inspection) and open the cutouts on track days, will this show me as much of a gain as LTs?
