my uncle built a tool for me at work to change valvesprings with. he turned it out on a lathe from a piece of 1.5" steel. one end is about 3/8" and chucks up into a drill press. the other end is a little smaller than a retainer, then bored out, then a window is cut in the side.
you put the head on the drill press, then chuck up the 3/8" side, the use the drillpress handle to compress the spring and change the lock thru the little carved out window. worked like a CHAMP! blaSSt let me run over and use his drill press . we layed the head up on the press and got it at the right angle with a few blocks of wood. put a red rag in the combustion chamber to hold the valves open and viola. here's a picture of it......

The Crane tool makes the job sooooooooo much easier.

We have the VHP/Crane spring tool on special for $105.99. Here is a link to the page.

If you have any questions about the tool, give me a call. It is by far the best valve spring tool we have ever used.

it was jsut said, but i'll say it again anyway.
for that one to work, you need to take the head off.... one half of that tool holds the valve, the other half compresses the spring. works ok on a bench.
