Default coolant flow question

This is a hard one for me to explain and I don't have pictures yet so I will do my best from memory. I have a 305 with an external electric waterpump hooked up. At the very top of the motor infront of the air intake there is a pipe for coolant that one is plugged up and nothing is connected to it. I have 2 other hoses going to the side of the motor one by the heads and one farther down on the block. i think these are the supply lines. then on the other side of the block there is 1 hose going back to the pump. can anyone tell me what the hell is going on here. I will have pictures soon this setup is very weird.

it looks like its just the basic spots for a sbc, but because of the external waterpump it looks like its spliced 4 times
