Default How much do gears affect my m6

I currently own an 01 TA WS6-M6 that I just bought a couple of weeks ago. i love the car so far, but it doesnt have enough low end for me, and im not all that impressed with the power down low, like under 4500 rpm's. I was wondering if I should get 4.10 or 3.73's, and also how much would this "wake up" the car? How much does it usually cost to have them installed at a shop? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks alot

What gears do you currently have? (check the RPO codes on the door):
GU2 - Axle Ratio 2.73, Rear

GU4 - Axle Ratio 3.08, Rear

GU5 - Axle Ratio 3.23, Rear

GU6 - Axle Ratio 3.42, Rear

Im pretty sure all M6's came with the 3.42s standard.
I have 3.42s and have no complaints about low end power (especially under 4500RPMs!).
Well remember the taller the gearing, the more power to the wheels, but you sacrafice how long you stay in a single gear.

yes, all are 3.42 with teh M6, and mine doesnt seem ot have anything for power, not to me atleast. It has alot of torque, but as far as getting up and going, that doesnt come in untill like after 4500. And i realize that the ls1 is a top end motor, but i think mine has something wrong. It is completelly stock, and i cant even break the tires loose in first without dumping the clutch, and definatelly cant break them loose in 2nd, just a nice shirp, let me know what could possibly be wrong. Car has 92k on it, so has high miles, and i am going to change the plugs this weekend(might still be original, havnt checked yet)

Wow, that does sound pretty weak...
I usually cant punch it in 1st without spinning the tires, and when I hit 2nd hard, I get a really nice yelp from them(actually its more like two yelps, you know, errrt errrt!). Today I even scratched 3rd...
Change out the plugs like you said (you might want to change the wires as well.)
BTW are you running premium gas?

Im sure someone more experienced will drop in here soon with more suggestions, Im still a noob.

it is a stock clutch, and there are 92k on it. But it isnt slipping, because every once and a while I can get a chirp out of it going into third if I am shifting like a mad man. Also, if you drop it at all, it lights them up

My car would always hook up well with the 3.42's, even on street tires. I had the same concerns with it when I got it. But I took it to the track and dyno and was impressed. I think the weight transfer and the weight of the car make it stable.

If you change gears I would get 4.10's. I just put a used 12 bolt in with 3.73's and was not impressed, they were better that stock, but not what I expected.
I switched to the 4.10's and it made a big difference. You will have traction issues with the 4.10's on street tires. The only down side I could see is if you do a lot of highway driving over 75 mph. For me thats not a big issue.

Price was about 250 for gears and 300 for install on the 12 bolt. I never touched my 10 bolt because I wanted to upgrade to a 12 bolt.

Default chirps

i have an 00 m6 SS and with the traction control off i dont need to dump the clutch....just release slow and slam the gas althought ill probably make my clutch slip after a bunch of those but i can leave some smoke and rubber...i never tried to chirp second/third cause i tend to do it wrong (also noob, kinda) i tend to be bad with clutches and trannys with my camaros...for the most part mines stock as well just a TB, MAS, flowmaster 80 series and hypertech tuning... although it came with some slp package stuff(exhaust which i replaced and slp lid) if i dump the clutch it sits still for a few seconds makin some good smoke.....dynoed at 333rwhp 355rwtq.....have fun with the ws6's those are sharp

Well right now i dont have 4.10's but when my gas tank gets under half and the weather is under 65 degrees I can punch it from 2k in 1st and spin the tires. But i have heard with the 4.10's there is not much traction until 3rd.

that is cool with me, with the 4.10s yo shouldnt need to worry about all out flooring the car untill you get in the upper rpm range anyways, because they will get you there alot quicker. Anyone else want to help out on this subject? I did change the plugs last weekend, and that didnt help at all, dont know if this is normal, or if this thing should have more power?

4.10's are def. worth it. it will lower your 1/4 mile time and really wake up the car, yet you are going to decrease the life of your 10-bolt...good luck, i have broken a set of 4.10's in my 10-bolt

*CatchMe* I just read your sig. Not trying to bust on you AT ALL but whats up with the Et and your RWHP?

427RWHP? 410RWTQ? and 12.4 @117?

Just curious. My unlocked converter with 309 horse nets me 12.3's
where did you race? Was it with a Gtech? or actual quater mile track?

I did mine at Englishtown and Atco.

Just curious to see where the hang up there is. If it is driver mod, no biggie.. in time you will learn. I just was wondering if you had a problem in the setup or something.

What was your short times?

Anyways.. I just switched over to an M6 setup. And just ordered GM 4.10's so I will let you guys know next week what it feels like

the bad time was becasue of the 60' times....it was a 2.09 on the best run. actual 1/4 mile in bradenton florida. im not the greatest driver when racing yet, and no traction off the line doesnt help either. when i get my new rearend this summer and get that in ill run some slicks or radials and hopefully get into the low 11's. hope that answers that
