Swapped on truck pan
I finally swapped on the truck pan I got off Yank's
garage sale a while back. It replaced a TCI chrome
pan which I never got to seal right. The TCI cork
gasket disintegrated when I took it off. Cork gaskets
should just be discarded. I had originally picked up a
trans filter and gasket kit at Advance telling them
for a 1500HD SIlverado. This was a mistake, I ended
up with a TH400-looking pan gasket and a stumpy
filter. The HD designation means 4L80E. If you do this
pan swap, get the kit for a 2002 Silverado 1500 with
the 5.3 motor. This filter is 1" longer in the neck than
the regular ones. I put this on and it all fit good with
no more leaks. It took 8 quarts of ATF to fill up the
deeper truck pan.
This pan is deeper but the lowest point is still my
Y-pipe. It's 1" shorter than the finned TCI super-deep
that I was dragging and its drain bolt is flush, so I
am hopeful that it'll be my last pan swap.

Thanks for the good info. I'm planning on getting the truck pan as well. Unfortunately, they don't make it with a drain plug anymore as others have mentioned already. You got lucky getting one of those older pans with a plug. I guess GM figured it was better job security for the GM techs by omitting the drain plug on the newer pans. I was going to order a truck pan with the drain plug installed from http://www.4l60-e.com I think it runs $62.00 w/plug.
