Default What is maintenence on a turbo setup like?

Ok guys, im getting ready for Futral to finish up my setup :

408 stroker and gt55 turbo.

I will be running race fuel, but only every so often.

What kind of things can I expect to change out? Im assuming springs every year or so, how often do you change plugs?

Is there any difference in changing the oil, and will I need to do something different in changing the oil since it has oil lines for the turbo?

what about o2 sensors? Will those last just as long, or will the FI setup kill it?

Just curious as to what I can expect in general.

TIA.

Ya i figured theres a lot of newbies jumping on the FI bandwagon, so why not give us a brief amount of info, maybe even sticky it or something at the top.

Also, how often would the turbo need to be rebuilt?

Solid or hyd roller? I doubt you'd need to change springs every year unless you really put a lot of miles on it. Now if it's a hairy-chested solid rolller, then yeah probably yearly maintenance.

I've never had a turbo car, but I would imagine changing the oil is the same process.

o2's I've heard mixed reviews on. You're talking narrow band stock o2's right? I know most of them don't like race gas that much but I've also read about some new ones that are supposed to be a lot more leaded-gas friendly so maybe look into those. Either way, I would expect to change them every few months if you're running a decent amount of racegas through them or maybe you can just clean them up from time to time before they get un-usable.

Hopefully some experts will chime in but that should get ya started.

You'll still have your narrowbands. A wideband is for monitering.

maybe you can pitch in since youve owned a turbo car. Maybe not long enough for maintenence, but youd have more of an idea then anyone thats said something yet.

what have you encountered so far?

Standalone? If so, then it could quite possibly have a wide band. your best bet is to ask Allan, since he is the one building the combo.

it all depends how hard you beat on it.
o2's will have to be replaced everyso often with the use of race gas, if your using stock computer then youll get a code to say there going bad.
at that level id get a wideband, narrow band dont tell much and are only used when the car goes into closed loop for easy driving, but are you getting a standalone?
springs should last a while, just keep an eye on them to make sure nothing funky happens like one breaks
on my car i usualy change the oil every 2k miles, having a turbo realy get the oil dirtier faster, just check the color and level of it everso often.
plugs may or maynot foul out, it would be good just to check them every so often to, make sure nothing funky is happening there either.
depending how much HP and how much you drive it to its max then engine may have to come out and be inspected at certain intervals (when dont know as it can depend) have to check the bearings, rings as they will most like wear after hard use, the rings can generally tell if there wearing out by the amount of blowby your gettting or a compression check. keep an eye on your gaskets, though if its really making power (high cylinder pressure) you might push some water out of them, just make sure you keep an eye on your coolant level.

definitely change oil at 2,000 miles. I would check oil levels every week.

I would let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes before shutting it down to prevent oil coking in the turbo.

race fuel will definitely eat your 02 sensors.

use synthetic oil exclusively and you dont have to worry about coking.

*edit* That's not to say that you shouldn't have a cool off period after running it hard. Like when I autoX I'll let it idle for 2-3 min before killing the ignition.

thanks for the info so far guys.

im not doing a stand alone, ill be on the stock pcm with 3 bar map sensor.

as far as power range, im guessing 700+rwhp

ill prob speak with allan to see what else he recommends.

ill need to find out for sure if its a narrow band or permanent wideband. from what i remember him saying, he said he was gonna install the wide band so i can monitor it properly.
