Default What rear end gear do I have?

My guages say I am turning around 1500 rpms in overdrive at about 50mph. Does this mean that my Trans Am has 2.73 gears or 3.23 gears?

Well, if it a real WS6 they should be 3:23's. I think the code on the door is GU5, but it's been a while since i've looked. I'm not shure what kind of RPM's I spin at 50mph, but at 70mph it's right at 2grand with 3:23's.

On the side of the driver's side door. Look for GU2 - 2.73s and GU5 - 3.23s.

IIRC at 50mph i turn around 1500rpm also. I have 3.23s.

I read on here somewhere that if you had an aluminum driveline that you 3:23's, and if it was steel you had 2:73's. Is there any truth to this?

Yes that is true. My car came with 2.73 gears and a steel driveshaft. I had to buy an aluminum driveshaft and went with a series 3 carrier and 3.42 gears. For the $300 they charge from the factory for the "performance axle" it's worth it for the 3.23 gears and aluminum driveshaft.

You know its odd ... I got on the freeway and was turning 2000rpms at 75 mph. Could it be that my tach is off or something? Or do I really have 2.73 gears?

Look at the sticker on the drivers door and look for RPO code starting with GU. And tell us.

My car came with 2.73s but had an aluminum driveshaft. I asked the mechanic about it at thh dealership and he didnt know why it had the alum ds either. He figured they ran out of steel when mine was being made and aluminum was used.
