Getting my winter car ready- timing belt change. Can't get crank to stop turning.
I apologize for posting here, but I have a problem. I bought a jetta winter car. I am changing the timing belt. Have changed them on many cars, but I can't get the crank to stop turning to take the crank bolt off. Car is a manual 5 speed. Any of you people have any suggestions?
on my z, I just put the car in 4fourth gear to get the crank to stop turning. on other cars I could block off the flywheel teeth. This car has no flywheel teeth and gears don't ssem to work

use long breaker bar and hook up a wire from starter relay 87 to 30. that should jump the starter and with breaker bar in place on the crank bolt, it should break loose

Air tools usually won't get the crank bolts off unless they have been taken out before. Try wedging a break over bar against the frame and spin the engine over like suggest above. If that doesn't work, auto zone may have a special tool you can rent to hold the crank while you put a breaker bar on the bolt.
