Stalling/idle problems with aftermarket converter?
Hey all,
I have a '96 Z28 and recently installed a race built 4L60E with a Pro Torque 3200 lockup stall.
I've read quite a few posts online about people having problems with their cars wanting to stall after installing a converter, and I am having the same issue.
The symptoms are as follows:
Closed loop, operating temperature, only in gear, if I tap the gas and let off, the RPMs will drop to ~300 and bounce back up/down for a few seconds and finally level out. The car stalled on me when I tapped the gas backing out of my driveway. This only happens at very low speeds.
Anyone have any idea as to what it could be?
I'm thinking maybe since there's more slippage/RPMs per TPS %, maybe the PCM is trying to adjust via the IAC?

i have the same problem with my car. it's intermittent. only if i let it sit a long time, then if i drive the car it will be fine for the rest of the day. i'll start it, it will search for the idle between 500-1,200 rpm for a few seconds... sometimes i have to hold the rpm above 1,000 rpm for a few seconds then it will come down and idle steady........ this is a trans problem? it makes sense cause it only started happening AFTER converting my 6spd to a t-400 car. anyone have info on this?

My idle would hunt/car die sometimes at low speed after the Vig install - raising the in gear idle fixed it - got tired of putting it in neutral when stopping at a light when it would act up.

A dyno tune would not alleviate idle issues. Depending on the software used to tune the car, you should be able to adjust the stall variables of slighly bump up the base idle by 50-100 rpms. No more than that is needed. The IAC has nothing to do with it, it is because (as posted) there is less rotating mass load on the engine so it cannot easily control the light weight conditon to set the idle to.
