Default Who makes the best custom cams?

Was considering Thunder Racing, but are there any standouts that can maybe do even better to optimize your particular combo. I'd want someone to really dissect the specs of the heads and your particular car, not just someone who does a general cam that should work. otherwise I might as well get an off the shelfer if ya know what I mean. Thanks!

A couple of my friends used Cam Motion/Futral and LS1 speed. I'm planning on going with Cam Motion/Futral more than likely.

So Futral does totally custom grinds? I thought they just had their off-the-shelf cams (f1 thru f15). Do they charge the same $389 for a custom grind? Also, do you have to tell them the exact specs you want or can you just say, this is my car, these are the heads I am using, these are the other mods and this is is what I am looking for in power/driveability and than they come up with the specs based on that?

Ed Curtis - he'll ask you to fill out a lengthy questionaire; well worth it as the cam he designed for me is what I wanted!

Looks like his cams costs about $62 more than others though. Don't Futral and TR also have a detailed questionaire or no?

Well I just read the first part of Ed Curtis's FAQ and I gotta admit it's exactly what I am looking for. Anyone know how long he usually takes from time of order to shipping the cam though??

Why use FTI "custom" camshafts over other companies' camshafts? Right from the onset, FTI engineers and designs all its camshaft profiles, one at a time, with the customer's "specific" project requirements in mind. The goal is to meet, and then exceed our customer's requirements when their camshaft is being developed and finalized.
Many performance shops offer only a limited selection of camshaft profiles in a vain attempt to cover all of their customer's performance needs. If one of these shop's "so called" custom camshafts is ready for shipment the day you order, how well engineered or designed for your particular combination can their camshaft be? Think about all the hundreds of possible combinations there are out there! How can a small selection of "pre-made" camshaft profiles, just sitting there on the shelf, meet all of your specific requirements?
They can't!
That is exactly why we do not feel that any camshaft should be chosen this way
and always develop our own designs for each specific application. Whether it's for a race only vehicle or a daily driver, each grind is completely designed and engineered for a customer's goals and overall combination. We always take into consideration every facet of the vehicle's dynamics and the customer's goals before a profile is finalized.
Another very important difference when chosing FlowTech Induction, is our philosophy of customer follow-up and communication. We always work closely with all our street customers and hardcore racers and are continually informed of their progress and successes. Whether it's tuning issues, suspension recommendations or just a friendly follow up, we are always going the extra mile to provide the best support for our

Just make sure you receive a Cam Pro Plus or Cam Doctor printout sheet with your new cam. Your cam will be exactly as the sheet says.

Thunder will supply this print out sheet with every cam they sell.

mine took 21 days from first contact to the cam arriving at my door with 2nd or 3rd day air. i got the cam, cam card which was more then a basic card but not doctored print out. i had mine put on a cam doctor though.

ed isnt for everyone, cams expensive and requires you too give alot of specific info and not just saying "stock". but if your willing to take a risk and try something new it can be the part that gives you the edge over the next guy.

i had my heads flowed with manifolds, pipes, measured all the specs of my shortblock, valve spring pressures ect. the cam was ground to my specific goal and combo. im pleased with ed and will be getting another grind from him in my next build up.

Yea, don't just assume you're going to get a fact filled sheet with your new cam, at least one of the BIG name sponsors (where I got my cam) just gives you a copy of their ad for the cam!

The risk is not getting a cam that does exactly what you want.

Maybe "the risk" means that you wont be getting a tried and true performer like the tr 224, f13, etc. When you buy those popular off the shelf grinds you know exactly what youre getting. Any custom cam is a bit of a gamble, but any of the custom cam designers should be able to do a great job. All the names mentioned above have good reputations here on tech. Theres no harm in calling a few - or even all of em - and discussing your needs. Go with whomever has the best idea of what youre looking for.

Why don't you call Comp Cams or Crane yourself? They'll grind you anything you want in just a few days.
