Default El cheapo tires for skinnies?

Anyone running really cheap auto parts store tires for skinnies at the track? I was thinking of getting a set of skinnies for the track, but the MT, hoosier, etc front runner tires are pretty spendy.

There are plenty of us that are running generic 165/R15s. They work awesome, I drive all over the place on them. Look for the ones that have a max psi of 44, they would probrably work better than the 32 or 36psi ones.

Make sure on those Pep Boys tire that the sidewall is a 8 ply. I ran 4 ply tires and even when I put over the max allowed psi in it the weight of the car still made the tire look flat. 8 ply is for 3000+ cars. Hope this helps. -Mark

Thanks for the tips guys. Do you think skinnies are worth it? I would keep my stock wheels on the rear with a drag radial, my car hooks well with the drag radials and im still on the stock rear.

Every little bit of weight off the car helps.

I have run cheap tires.

I think if you start running real fast, and getting some air, get the better tires. I blew out the sidewall on a Pepboy skinnie, not sure if it was from launches or what, but I had minimal street miles on the tires.

That was my only concern. What PSI were you running your pep boys at John? Id think if you kept them at 36-40 they should hold up.

We have been using the cheap 165R tires for a while. The one problem we had was getting the tire pressure perfect. Just a hair over or under and the front end would bounce really bad.

The car never trapped over 105mph in the 1/8 (no 1/4 mile times yet), but these tires were designed to work on a VW Beetle with a wopping top speed of 68mph. I don't think these tires are speed rated at all. They aren't guaranteed to stay together at 65mph, let alone 130mph. Having one come apart as you are crossing the traps at 130mph could be REALLY bad.

We will be switching to an ET front or equivelant next season.
