shortening a short stick

shortening a short stick
I have a short stick on my car now and I orded a second off ebay. Its 6 1/2 inches and it said that it could be cut down to 5 1/2 which is what i want to do. How do I do that? The obvious answer is cut 1in off of the threaded area but would't the threads were it was cut be messed up making it damn near impossible to get the **** on with out stripping either the stick or the ****. I could have orded it this was from the seller but I did't know i already had a short stick untill it was to late. The car had a few mods when i bought it. I just figured that the shifter was the stock hurst. Anyone know the proper way to do this?
Thanks
Jon

I agree, put a small chamfer on the edge of it after it's cut. Use some sand paper or a triangular file ( if you have one ) to remove the burrs and you should be money. I personally took my pro 5.0 stick and cut about 2" out of the center and re-welded it. Works fine for me.

Almost 2 1/2" off my Hurst Billet Plus. Get the correct from Ace Hardware(16mmX1.50)
first. It's easier if you do it in two cuts, so you can leave a couple of threads for the die to start straight.
