160* thermostat...allow a little bit more compression?

Default 160* thermostat...allow a little bit more compression?

I'm doing an ls1 build for my truck. Since I have a 160* thermostat, can I run just a tad bit more compression, than an ls1 with the stock thermostat? The reason I thought that was, isn't the 160* thermostat supposed to allow a little more timing without detonation?

A cooler motor should be able to run a little more timing, but it is really all in the tune. Sometimes more timing dosen't nessisarilly mean more power. Alot depends on your quench area and the flame travel of you combustion chambers. The extra compression you get from those heads will play into the equation also. All in all, it sounds like the set-up you are putting together shouldn't have any trouble running into detonation with the gas we have around here. Just make sure you use a good tuner, like Futral.

Cooler temp will pull less timing, but you need to either change the fan temps in the PCM or override them manually with a relay and switch. The lowest I saw on my Firebird was 172. That was the high speed fans running and the 160 thermo at 70mph in the winter. But running more compression is more dependant on the camshaft. There are motor builders that ran 13:1 CR on 93-octane gas. They did it because the camshafts was large duration and lift with a narrow LSA. So alot of the compression was bleed off in favor for high RPM power. With the cam in your profile, you could run 10-10.5:1 on premium gas like my LS1.

How would the F2 cam (224/224-.588/.588-112) do with a stock LS1 shortblock and a compression of around 11:1-11.2:1 with 5.3 heads milled .010"? Would that be a good cam for that compression? Or, should I go with a little bit of a split, like a 220/224-112?

The larger intake duration of the 224/224 actually gives that cam more valve ovelap than the 220/224. Contrary to the split, the 224/224 actually has 0 overlap as compared to -2 on the 220/224. Really, your not in a position to have to worry about bleeding off compression with a camshaft. Your compression isn't high enough at 11:2 to even worry about it. I'd throw the 224 in it and roll to Futral.
