Is it worth a swap from Macs to long tubes?
WHo has seen valid gains at the track and on the dyno going from Macs to long tubes? WOuld getting a new y pipe built be just as good of a swap as going to the new headers? I am looking at Pacesetters Or Edelbrock victor series headers or jsut getting Allan Futral to build me a new y pipe for my Macs. The Macs have a awsome ceramic coating on them and have done great on my car so far, Just looking to see if I would dropoff a 10 th or so in the 1/4 mile going to long tubes.,

I went from macs to a set of flp long tubes both with ORY. And changed the flowmaster to a gmmg with a E-cutout in the I pipe.
The dyno power went from 365 to 390 with the cut out open.
And if I remember correctly, I went 12.6x to around 12.19. But that was also going from a 10 bolt to a 9".
You could mod those macs and maybe get 10 more HP. Port the openings of the primaries, grind down the welds for better fow.
And I hear of people cutting the ball flang off and weld a 3 bolt flat flang to them.
And maybe get a bigger Y made for it.
When I put the flp's on, I ported the openings of the primaries. You can actually look in there and see the welds. Not any more. There smooth inside now.

The mids probably flow as well as any long tube, it's all in scavenging, collector and primary length.
However, you're car is pretty maxed out in the BHP department for an n/a car. Even if the long tubes do give you more power I doubt it'll be enough to make no more than a few thousands (0.0x) difference. As the quicker you go the more HP is required per tenth of a second dropped.
Weight reduction and suspension would probably be more benifical. Either that or a shot of the old NOS. Apart from that save up for an FI option or larger displacement.

Unless you get long tubes with the 4" flowmaster ypipe, I wouldnt bother. The good ypipe is gonna cost $300.
Its a lot of money to pick up a little hp though. I am gonna get the qtp's and tsp true duals with sweet thunder mufflers. I am doing it for sound more so than power.

Wether it's worth it or not is up to you at the end of the day. I started off with Macs and ended up with Jet Hots. Was it worth it? I couldn't tell you. I rebuilt the whole motor so I ended up comparing apples to oranges.
FWIW, I was very happy with the Macs and I'm quite pleased with the Jet Hots

well ok no i isn't. But they've done all the mods that will give them the easy ponies pretty much (intake mods, exhaust mods, cam, etc.). Unless they step up to a different cam better heads, and so on I just don't see a straight swap to LT's netting them much when they're already running low 11's. Might be wrong though.

I'd say keep the mac's and do some work to them. I bought mac's and a custom y pipe off a guy here that wasnt too far away, and I am very happy with them. He made 540 rwhp with them on a 422 with a mild cam. He went to LT's and true dual's and lost power he said. He ported the inside of the headers, and put 3" collectors at the end. I'd do something with yours like he did.

That is what I was thinking too. I am planning on porting my heads better but the cam is doing its job quite well. Thanks guy's , I had some well known people tell me it would give me about 10 more rwhp but I believe just modding the Macs will give me about the same with a custom y pipe and cutting the ball and socket flanges off.
THe reason this is even an issue is I went to No Problem raceway this past Saterday night and the car ran 11.40 @ 119.65 with the 17 inch Forgeline wheels and 275x40x17 tires on the front and m/t drag radials in the back. Now I have a mission to only put skinnies and do some exh. work and go for a 11.0000 or 10.999 in a heavy stock weight (except front skinnies) car. THis thing is heavy and I added an aluminum flywheel since my 11.38 pass last year to try out from Spec. SO far I like it , Still 60 ft.s in the 1.59 -1.61 range but a lot more consistent doing so. It pulls hard through the gears , I just have to rev the engine higher on the shifts so it does not fall off to far on the shifts.
I think with this upgrade and doing the Macs, skinnies, THat I will reach my goal. Then I will put better flowing heads as Mine are only flowing 257 @.600 on the intake side and 219 @.600 on the exh. side. I plan to get my intake side ported better as they only have very little bowl work and 2.02 valves done. Stock exhaust valves.
For the record, I do have a little 75 shot of nitrous but so far , having it hooked to my horn button, it slows my shifts down to where it makes more mph but the et is not to noticeable. I ran a 11.36 @ 123.35 mph but this was also with the track going away and only pulling a 1.76 leaving on motor hp and spraying 3rd and 4th hitting the rev limiter at the top of 4th crossing the traps.

Like others said, if you change to LT's you might pick up a few horses over mac's that have had some work done to them. 5-10 rwhp MAX. Don't be like the guy that sold me the mac's and y pipe. He regretted selling them after his car made less power with LT's and TD's!

i was using macs on my 224cam only stock motor. now i have a 383 going with a much larger 230's cam and a nice set of heads i figure i well as just get long tubes to maxumize all the power my motor has
