Input Shaft/Housing Differences

Input Shaft/Housing Differences
I went down to the local transmission wreaking yard yesterday and saw a lot of input shafts/housings. Quite a number had the splines going all the way to the tip (not the pilot). I was told that none of them were from late model transmissions, so I didn't buy one.
My current transmission has the pilot on the end and I want to use an LS1 type Torque Converter (TCI - Streetfighter). I've been using a B29 Torque converter (with a pretty low stall speed).
Is there a difference between these earlier type input shafts and newer input shaft (made for LS1 applications)?
If so, what is the difference?
