That said and done, the auto boxes work very well in the Fbody's and do perform well on the road. To really see the advantage of a manual car on a twisty road you'd have to drive like a total lune and well beyond what is reasonably acceptable for performance road driving.
At the drag strip the M6 cars should be quicker because they lose less power thru the drivetrain (more rwhp) and the internal gearing is better as is the final drive ratio. High 12's @ 109mph are possible, although low 13's @ 107mph are more common. An A4 will do mid to mid/high 13's more often at 102-104mph depending on which final drive ratio.
However, all you need to do is add a good stall, some 3.73 gears and some sticky tyres and chances are you'll beat more M6 cars than those that you lose too with like for like mods.
If you're not happy going for a M6 get a A4 - you won't be dissapointed

IMHO a M6 will always be more fun to drive just for the fact that you can control the gearing. But with that said, my A4 is awesome to drive. If you put a stall in an A4 they are pretty hard to beat as far as consistency is concerned. I noticed a difference just by increasing the shift firmness and moving the shift points higher on my stock stall. But I plan on getting a 3500 stall put in.
Here is another thing A4's don't have to worry about as much while doing the 1/4. Valve float and 10 bolts rear ends. If you miss a shift in a M6 you can float the valvetrain and do some damage. Also, a M6 can break a rear end while stock just by putting some drag radials and hooking up good. A4's can just preload and launch with little chance of breaking the rear.
Just some food for thought.

Out of the 10-12 of us that used to hit the track together (most were M6 cars), there weren't any M6s that were significantly quicker mod for mod (or stock for stock) than the A4 cars.
Bascially, stock for stock, figure that the 1/4 mile ET will be nearly the same, with 1-2mph higher traps for the M6 assuming the M6 driver is average/good. If the M6 driver is excellent, then it might run a couple tenths quicker than the A4 car.

both a4 and m6 are limited by the power of the engine, not the gearing

Yea from what ive heard, at the track, the A4s are quicker and the M6's are faster. Ive only been to the track once and light bolt on auto was running 13.2@107, there was one other f-bod ls1 there, a vert ss M6 and he didnt break 14 all day. Its all i nthe driver. With a good driver m6 stock vs a4 stock ,you will see close to same results i believe, stalled the A4 will be quicker but the m6 still faster. For the street M6>A4, for the track, A4>M6

If you don't like manuals, get an automatic and put in a torque converter. Then that would would be faster than just about any M6 with equal mods. From what I've seen, most stock A4's run 13.6-13.9@102-104mph and most stock M6's with good/decent driving run 13.2-13.6@104-107 mph. You want to get the 3.23 gear ratio which is the GU5 RPO code like WhiteKnightZ28 said.

i would add some insiteful knowledge, but most covered it al. there are pros and cons to both drivetrains. get what u want and not what others tell u to get. remember U are the one paying the monthly payments and driving the car everyday.

Well I have had both. A 01 WS6 a4 and now a 02 WS6 m6. I consider myself to be a well above average driver, I ran 12's with a lid on street tires the first time to the track with my car.....could have gotten even lower with more seat time.
Anyway I am positive that an equally running engine (meaning both cars were putting out the same or as close to the same power as possible, no freaks, no turds) that with a great driver in both that the m6 would prevail with them both being stock....I have had two strong running LS1 cars so this is not just BS talk either.
A stalled auto is diff, but stock for stock all the m6 needs to stay ahead indefinately is a great driver to get all it's potential to the ground...that's my opinion.

well, for me i've always driven a manual cars and it's really a PITA if u drive daily, for me i find the autos much more fun and i can't wait to get an auto.. it's about what u like..i'd go with an auto and when speaking about an f-body,, they are too damn fast to think about a fraction of a second..

hey io'm drunk as hell right nwo but, if uwant t roll race, DO Not but an auito. Autos have too mayn dead spots plus they are boring. If you get a stall it wilk sound like ur flooring it everywhere when ur not and u'll still be nust a boring auto. Get a mnaul. a sports cars is not a sports car without a manual REMEMBER THA.
