Cam Question
Ok, Im not asking for what cam to get, just info, so many of you can breath a sigh of relief. I was wondering if someone could give me the specs on the GM846 Cam, how does it handle on the street, i know its a very streetable cam, but thats pretty much the extent of my knowledge, where will it put my power in the band? and is it easy to distiguish it at idle, like does it have a noticeable lope? Thanks

Degrees Duration @ .050 Int./Exh. 222/230
Degrees Advertised Duration Int./Exh. 284/292
Degree Lobe Separation 112
Open/Close @.050" 4/38 Cam Lift Int./Exh. 52/(2)
Lash Hot Int./Exh. .000/.000
Gross Lift Int./Exh. .509/.528
those are the specs that i found on the net.. dont know if they are right but those are the first ones i found.
as far as the cam being streetable, thats a matter of opinion. what size motor do you have? auto or manual?

according to cranes website, peak power will come around 6000 rpms and the rpm range will be between 2500 and 6000.

Not quite sure what the lift would be for the 846 w/1.6rr, I think it would be around #.539/.558. There's a formula for this but I'm not quite sure what it is, I wanna say you divide the lift # by 1.5 then multiply it by 1.6 to get the correct lift #. I've always just added .030 when looking at cam lift #.

Yeah I've been searching for more info on times and power on most of the boards. There are just not many people running the 846 in their cars. I don't know why when its cheaper and bigger than cc305 and cc503.

I have spec'd the 846 as a more modern and intense alternative to the HOT cam, with 1.6 rockers, in 3 motors. One L98 and two LT1s. They both need a spring change to run the 846 with 1.6, because the lift is .543"/.563. I used the Comp Cams Conical valvesprings, when they were rated at lifts up to .600". It's a great street cam if you don't mind it being noticeable. Excellent performance.
If I was doing one today though, I would have Comp grind me a similar or slightly smaller .050 duration from their highest intensity hydraulic rollers, the Xtreme Energy line, but the more aggressive of the lobe pairs (the 31xx lobe numbers). About $360 direct from CC.
Or go solid roller. The Xtreme Street Roller lobes very intense but reliable.
Both of these options would require good heads and an upgrade of both pushrods and springs and maybe retainers and guide seals.
