So I’m removing my Intake, after lifting it up to my surprise I see a cloth / rag laying down the middle of the lifter valley over top of the lifter retainer. It runs the full length of the valley. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this before or were the guys at the plant drunk when they put it together? To the best of my knowledge the engine has never been worked on before I bought the car from the original owner. Any opinion on how / why it would be there??

I've heard of it happening before. Heck, I lost my motor (spun a bearing) less than a week after a GM service department "worked" on it to fix the intake manifold oil leak.

It probably got the intake manifold leak repair, and got put in there then. Again, it's not unheard of, I remember another guy from the old f-body.org fourth-gen list having it happen to him.

I have heard of that happening before too, prolly left there while some one was doing an intake seal fix.

So I should just remove it and insure all the material is out of the valley. This is my first LT1 and I had never seen anything like this before. Not as if I do this for a living, just really enjoy working on my car during the weekends to improve it some as a daily driver. Thanks for the quick replies, that one less worry I have now.

Yeah, if it isnt torn, should be good to go, I imagine if its been in there for who knows for how long and hasnt mangled in to some thing you can just take it out and it should still be in its entirety.

Well needless to say it has been there for a long time. When I start to lift it, it starts to fall apart. I just be carefull and insure I get it all remove. Learn something new everyday. Again Thanks.

Drain ur oil in a seperate oil catch and inspect it for any signs of anything. And I mean really inspect it. But if nothing is wrong chalk up one of your LT1 lives as gone now , next time could be catastrophic failure.

Man I was looking into doing the "Rag Removal" mod on mine. I heard it makes the intake flow better. That and some stickers and any car will go 12's

You're lucky it didn't come apart into the cylinders or catch fire! Could have been really bad!
