? about oil pumps (upgrades)
I know a guy selling a brand new, never installed Thunder Racing "modified LS6" oil pump. They are $150 new, he is giving me a decent deal if I want it.......is it worth getting? Are the stock LS1 (2002) pumps bad? How difficult is it to replace?
Any opinions, thoughts, etc will be welcomed (constructive ones anyway )

They fixed the pump problems before year 2000 I believe.
You'd have to remove the water pump, balancer, timing chain cover and some other stuff to get to it.
If it's a good buy go for it and keep it on the shelf until you are ready to get into the motor. Unless your oil psi iffy......
My oil pressure never goes below 40psi and yours should be the same.

Only to get the TR pump is if you having problems with your oil pressure dipping below 40psi, its also good pratice to go ahead and change it when doin a cam change, since you got most of the junk outta the way, I have the TR pump and my oil pressure stay around 60 psi !

When you swap the cam, I'd install a new pump. It's a good investment. True they fixed some stuff for 00 or 01 & up as Rick said, but Bill had his die in his 02 while sitting at a stop light. PSI just went to 0!!! If he had beed racing when it happened the motor would have gone with it. And the modified versions have been ported to increase flow, and have stiffer springs to retain pressure (@ the higher flow).

I wouldn't worry about the oil pump in an 01 unless you are doing a cam swap and have some miles on the car. But cam swaps I've done had less than 15k on them so I just left the oil pump in. The 98 has 80k on it so I'll be doing a oil pump install.....

Besides, considering the lack of tim I spend at the track (and I do NOT street race) it doesn't seem like I need anything bigger, cam-wise.

And honestly, regarding cam size, I am not building a race car so I can't see a need to go any bigger and if I ever change my mind, I can always get a bigger one.

You guys are killing me here. I know y'all were teasing......I just like to be a smart *** and respond anyway.
I decided to get the oil pump, it was $30 or 40 cheaper then ordering a new one once shipping was factored in and it is brand new in the box still. Now it can sit in my "spare parts" box till I decide to go ahead with that whole cam mess.

Maybe you need to start collecting Blue cars like DrEvyl is purple cars. You could keep my car as a daily driver, and then make yours into a race car! That sounds like a great idea!
