An interesting comparison from a local shop...
A shop local to me did a test. They had a bone stock '97 LT1 6-speed and a bone stock '02 LS1 6-speed. They dynoed them back to back. The LT1 put down 273 RWHP and the LS1 put down 313 RWHP. This is on a dynojet. Both were similarly optioned Z28s.
This is a stock vs. stock difference of a solid 40 RWHP. We all knew that. Here's where they started doing some fun stuff. They decided to upgrade the parts on the LT1 to be more comparable to '01/'02 specs to see where the motors evened out.
'01/'02 exhaust manifolds flow very well. About as well as shortys. They had a set of Pacesetter shortys laying around and put them on the LT1. After another dyno with just the shortys, it dynoed 283. It gained 10 rwhp. This is still on the stock catback btw.
Then they decided to upgrade the heads. They had a set of ported LT1 heads that flowed at 245 intake/169 exhaust which is semi-close to stock LS1 heads. After putting these heads on the car, it dynoed 300 rwhp exactly (gaining 17 rwhp from previous).
After putting 3" y-pipe, 3" intermediate pipe and a 3" Magnaflow catback on the car, it dynoed 314 rwhp. They're going to dynotune the car next week to see what they can get.
I found this really interesting. I'm going to see if I can get dynosheets from the shop and I'll scan them for you guys. This LT1 is their shop project car, and will be ran at the track shortly.
First time at track (untuned): 12.82@107.4 on a 1.87 60 foot.

that just shows ya if you put similar equipment on an lt1 car that it can roll with an ls1 car but according to a lot of ls1 guys that impossible
remember boys when you got similar flowing intake, exhaust, cam, etc 346 ci and 350 ci can be identical whether they have an lt or ls suffix

Nice project. I'd like to see the LT1 get up to stock LS1 status, then upgrade the LS1, AND LT1 and see, how mod for mod, they react. Say put a lid on the LS1, then Put a 1le elbow and CAI on the LT1 ect..

My old Auto teacher in high school useto always tell us in class "All else being equal on an engine, the cubic inches will always make more power"
He would do this because the chevy guys would start argueing with the ford guys, then the dodge guys would get into it and BAM class room would get loud.
What he meant was that if all the mods and numbers(flow) on an a pair of engines, the thing that will give one the edge is Cubic inches.

They were going to run the car today, but it's rained out. They're shooting for wednesday! BTW the run will be back to back on street tires and then nitto 555Rs.
True if you do the same mods to an LS1, the LT1 is going to be screwed. But consider the mods to the LT1 in this example. The heads were very very lightly ported, no where near their true potential. They used shorties, again nowhere near true potential. It shows just how close the two motors are. Like someone said above, all things being equal displacement decides who makes more power. Of course like someone else said, we race cars, not dynos. That's why they're trying to get track times ASAP
I'll try to get the curves up for you guys. Once again, the curves are very close. The LS1 torque curve peaks later than the LT1, however they're both very very close to area under the curve.
I'll update this next wednesday for sure with some times.
Glad to hear it tmonee. Do you have any track times for her yet?

Intresting. Been waiting for something like this for a while. Just sucks that in the end the LS1 will still be ahead h.p range. I wish they couldve added a cam to the mix. What are stock LT1 cam specs and what are stock 98 LS1 cam specs? When do the 18* heads play a part?

i think stock 02 ls1 cars were rated at 310 fwhp. i guess we all know that the ls1's are underrated from the factory.
