Ported Throttle Body
What is a reputable place where I can get my stock throttle body ported. What does it include: 1)Porting of the original throttle body 2)Larger fins for the throttle 3) As close to 90 degree opening as possible
Thanks,
Brandon

Re: Ported Throttle Body
Bauer Racing Engines
1. Yes, that is how we normally do it.
2. The throttle blade stays the stock size since a larger opening on the TB does not work, because you can't enlarge the intake manifold opening any.
3. I have an adjustable throttle stop which will allow you to fine tune the opening to 90. It comes set very close to that already.

Re: Ported Throttle Body
Speedplay,
As Scott wrote in the article the oil pump stud nut came off and that caused the oil from the pump to leak out there and shoot oil into the pan and not to where it is needed. Rather than try and run 12 pulls on no oil. I yanked it off to save the $15,000 in parts laying there. The bearings looked good, no scoring or burns, but they are all replaced and the crank is being polished now. I'm going to take the engine back down hopefully to get a run on it to see how it stacked up on that dyno. For some reason that dyno was reading 6-10% down from the Westech one. So I expect a total score of about 820 or more there. My testing dyno runs showed that the engine was worth about 890 at least. Which would have been good enough for at least 3rd. The funny thing is that engine did 40 pulls on the dyno during testing and not one oil pressure problem. Don't ask me why the gremlin came out when it did.
Anyways the engine will be for sale soon. If anyone wants a bad *** SBC for a street car that one makes big block torque and power numbers.
BTW I am working on a 383 LS1 now that is using alot of the same tricks that I have learned from the engine masters contest. Should be cool to see that when it gets done.

Re: Ported Throttle Body
Sorry to be off topic, but........
Bret, sorry to hear about your gremlin. Wierd how those things jump out at the worst time. I can also relate to your comment about the the dyno being way off compared to Westech. Seems that both south and east dyno facilities were low. I had the opportunity to help Tom Nelson with his entry and we learned some pretty interesting stuff as well. It's nice to be able to transfer the technology to customers engines. It seems that win, lose or draw, the lessons learned elevate what we do for a living. Are you going to enter next years competition?
See ya,

Re: Ported Throttle Body
Rich,
Thanks.
I hope to find a sponsor to help me out with the Big Block for next year. I have even more tricks for that engine combo. I'm waitng for my entry packet right now, if I can get everything lined up you bet I will be there!
Did Tom really run .858 lift? What was the deal with that cam? I also saw that the heads are 285cc how much did they flow?
Bret
Thanks.

Re: Ported Throttle Body
I dont know much about the Shaner, but Ive got the Bauer and I love it. It looks awesome and has the performance. He was a great person to work with and did it incredibly fast. Much thanks goes out to Bret. Keep up the good work!

Tom is also looking for some sponsorship help. The big blocks should be a real challenge both financially and technologically. We're looking the Chryslers with that big tappet.........but leaning on the Chevy.

It was only 236º @ .050" and that was the smallest cam of three that he had. The largest he had .957" with 260º was to high rpm oriented. The ports were actually 285cc and flowed 360cfm. They broke the 23º record on my flow bench. One of the fascinating things we learned is that the motor didn't suffer low speed torque with all that lift and port area. Go figure.......

Re: Ported Throttle Body
Yeah guys the best thing to do is e-mail me @ bretbauer@hotmail.com
headbam,
I still don't know how the heads didn't suffer low RPM TQ with ports that big. My heads flowed 300cfm and were 215cc's while my cam was also very small at 214/224, but I was still in the neighborhood of almost 900 average with no coatings. I looked at the AFR's like ShermanRan but didn;t like 235cc ports, looked at the Pro's and the Edelbrock Super Vics and didn't like the port sizes for the flow. They all hurt my low RPM TQ because of the port sizes. What intake did Tom use? I used a epoxied super Vic that didn't hurt any top end but helped the low end and on top of that I ran a 950cfm Carb.
Either way has Tom's numebr changed? I'd like to give him a call and see what he did. BTW what is your real name?

Re: Ported Throttle Body
Bret,
If nothing else, the Engine Masters proved that there are more than one way to skin a cat. I really enjoyed seeing the different approaches with different engines.
Tom used a Super Vic also. Not much cleanup at all. In fact, he only intended to use the Super Vic only to get a baseline. His intended intake was a crossram, but it leaked water when installed and he didn't have time to deal with it. Tom had two major things that hurt his chances. First, displacement was 7 ci too small and second, compression was a lowly 10:1. Makes us wonder what could have been if he'd been able to change pistons.........
Tom can be reached at (818)998-5593. He's a pretty cool guy and has some interesting thoughts on engine design. He's currently working on a WS6 twin turbo. Knowing Tom, it should be a monster........
I'll try contacting you somtime this week Bret, I'd like to talk to you about your ported throttle bodies. My name is Richard Reyman and I own West Coast Cylinder Heads. Our web site is proheads.com. Talk to you soon.

Bret was really concerned when I had trouble with Jantzer and I appreciate that. Bret offered to help if he could.
Bret...still not out of the woods totally, maybe I'll contact you soon.
Thanks
