Here's my 96 SS with a Pypes 3" cat crossing over from the driver's side and a Catco 3" cat on the passenger side. You'll need a compact cat for the driver's side crossover and the Pypes or SLP is about the smallest.

you will get better flow with 2. Thats why the 97-97 made more HP then previous models. And you make even more with 0

I have Pacesetter LT's and ORY and I run a Carsound(Magnaflow) hi-flow cat after the Y. Works amazing! The part number for the Cat is MPE-94109 which I bought from summitracing for $60. The Cat is rated for up to 6.2L engines and I felt no power difference going from no cats to this hi-flow cat.

To be somewhat legal you need 2 cats on a 96-97. Although technically, you're not supposed to change the location of either cat and longtubes definitely move the driver's side cat.
