My sister drove her car with no oil in it
she evidently cracked her oil pan last night and when she started it this morning it made some very loud banging noises. She was late for practice so she decided to drive it anyway(not knowing that the car had no oil, dumbass) my dad was on the other side of the yard and heard her car and ran out to stop her. She drove about 20 feet. Its a '99 beetle. She definately doesn't deserve to have a car anymore. But my question is, Do you think the engine is gone?

Toast!
Chicks and oil, what's the problem? I know of a lady who overfilled her engine because she thought that she was supposed to fill it all the way to the filler cap! She just kept pouring oil in until it came up to the top!

If I recall correctly the pan is a pretty expensive piece... Also some advice, dont disconnect the battery without a pigtail adapter (or was it piggy-back adapter?), otherwise the computer gets f'd up (as with most newer European cars).

Is it the Beetle with the 1.8T turbo engine? If so, the turbo is most certainly toast.
The engine itself: Who knows? I'm thinking the residual oil provided at least some lubrication.
There are videos out there of kids attempting to blow a motor, they drained the oil and revved the crap out of it, but that little thing just kept going!! Maybe she's lucky.

Like some others have said, change the pan add oil and see how it does.
An ex girlfriend did the same thing drove her dodge dart from her house to mine (about 5 miles) with not a drop of oil in the car, let it cool down added oil and she ended up driving it for another couple of years

TAKE IT FROM A FORMER VOLKSWAGEN TECHNICIAN. If its a 2.0 , its probably fine. it might make some noise at first, but just drive it anyway. i have replaced no lie probably 50 oil pans on beetles and not a single one of them needed an engine. These motors are tough as nails. If its a 1.8 liter turbo, you can probably kiss it goodbye. They have oil problems as is, and if she ran it for any extended length of time its going to have screwed up cam journals and shavings up in the head. also the turbo will be gone. Expect to pay around 250 bucks for the oil pan (if you go to the dealer) and a couple hours of labor. Even if the motor does have a knock let her drive it anyway. We had a chick once put aftermarket gauge faces on her cluster that covered up her idiot lights. She was driving it and lost a coolant hose. She drove it until it locked up. It got so hot it melted the plastic gaurd thats on top of the cam (to keep it well lubricated) which ran down the oil return holes in the block and clogged the oil pump. Long story short, her extended warranty wouldnt cover it, and she couldnt afford a new motor, so we put a hose, oil pump, and cam cover on it and she drove it out. (knocking of course) that was over a year ago, it still runs, and she routinely gets better than 30 mpg on the highway....
You got lucky she was driving a VW.
