Default LT1 vs. LS1 T56

Whats the difference between the LT1/LS1 6 speed transmission? I know the obvious bell housing, but is there anything else? Gear ratios, anything? If I found an LT1 t56 could I just swap bellhousings and bolt it up to my LS1 or is there more to it??

Okay, I'll answer my own question in case anybody else is wondering. The input shafts are different.

There is more to it than that. Basically they are not interchangable.

Yeah, they aren't interchangeable because of the bellhousing and input shaft.

other than that i dont think there is that much of a difference because i did a A4 to M6 conversion and almost bought a ls1 T-56 to convert the input shaft and buy a bell housing because i couldnt find a LT1 T56 but i found one at the last minute

I'm thinking the only other difference might be the place where the slave cyl. bolts to the LS1 tranny/ and the throwout bearing fork bolts to the LT1 tranny. Do you by chance know how much it would have costed to for the right input shaft??

A search would have gotten you a quicker reply. The only way this swap is reasonable ($$$ wise) is if you have a bad LS1 unit on hand and exchange the front adapter, bell. & input gear. This assumes that the input gear is still good. It also reqiures you to re-shim the front bearings( requires a very large shim pack).

There are some differences throught the years in gearing but not a whole lot, the later years got an increasing in torque rating by using a less aggressive 1st gear and also came with a .50 overdrive for even better mileage. Mine for example does not have that OD it has a .68 I think. But my first gear is steeper. Something like a 2.95 . The differences are not a big deal tho, altho I do think there is one to be considered the weakest due to an even steeper 1st gear I think.
